My Top 3 Candidates for NY Rangers Head Coach

The New York Rangers parted ways with head coach Gerard Gallant on Saturday. With a roster that should be contending for a Stanley Cup, GM Chris Drury has a major decision to make. Will he go for a head coach with NHL experience? Will he hire the next big assistant coach? Will he promote from within? Let’s talk about it.

  1. The problem in New York isn't coaching. It's roster construction.
That's the GM's fault. There is a void of talent in the middle of this line-up because this rebuilding team accelerated the process with Trouba and Panarin and didn't add enough good young talent to fill out a line up.
With Shesterkin you can always win but the team is actually getting ready to decline if Lafreniere et al don't make the next step.
The coach is pretty incidental. Add a pro who doesn't cost you games.
Maybe Drury can rework the roster but it will be tough.

  2. As an avid Caps fan, time has passed Laviolette. He was terrible with our young players. He did not develop them, and they ended up in Hershey. If they made 1 mistake in a game, he would bench them for a period, sometimes for the entire game. He made them worse players than when they arrived.
He would not stick with any forward lines more than a couple of games. Yes, there were many injuries, but he always changed the lines every couple of games. There was no continuity.

He would be a bad hire.

  3. At least you mentionned that Quenneville would be the guy if not for "external circumstances". But "understandably so", not so much.
Unless we have proof that Quenneville was to blame directly for the Chicago scandal. I am still waiting for the case to be made by the way.
So far, it seems to me that Quenneville is just one of the scapegoats in this matter. Nothing new in the hypocritical world we live in.
So, the next best choice could be Brunette since he took over for Quenneville in Florida and won the President trophy in 2021-2022.
But wait, what's this? His team got swept afterwards by the Lightning in the first round.
    Oups!
You know what? The best guy is Quenneville. He did take "partial responsibility" for the Kyle Beach fiasco and resigned in Florida, he followed the program of the NHL so far as I understand it and he paid his dues, whatever they are.
So, there is only one problem remaining and that is that the self righteous people out there love cancel culture…for others than themselves, of course.
But if the Rangers won't pursue this avenue because of the fear of the backlash, ask Scotty Bowman if he's willing to serve one more year. But even if he was younger he is probably too hot since he is the father of the other scapegoat Stanley Bowman and the self righteous love also guilt by association. 🙁
I am kidding in part. What I am looking for is a guy with the track record and the ability to get the best out of a star studded lineup.
    A guy like Joel Quenneville.
If he's not available, who is the next best option?

  4. Since 2000 the Rangers have had 9 different coaches, or one every 2+ years. Absolutely no stability to this franchise. The only constants are Dolan and Sather, which is all we need to know. Wonder why we are not picking on them?

  5. Hire laviolette and your young guys will never develop. Take it from a caps fan, his coaching style is not going to win you big moment games. Decent regular season coach, that’s about it.

  6. Try to dump Panarin & resign Tarasenko. Use the extra cap space for other acquisitions. Hire Mark Messier as head coach and surround him with experienced assistants. There’s your recipe for a Stanley Cup.

  7. Rangers should hire Joe Biden.. he’s done so much.. he’ll take them right to the cup

  8. Kris Knoblauch makes sense for the coaching job and he has been around some of the Ranger players and they know his system and this will probably bring up the top Wolfpack players to MSG.

  9. If we had acquired Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko 2 years ago, instead of waiting until this year, then our 1st season under Turk would’ve been a trip to game 7 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final because then we wouldn’t have been pushed to a game 7 in the 2nd round, we would’ve swept that series, particularly if we had kept the 1 vs 8 playoff format, instead of switching to this division style format and this would’ve happened, if the Atlanta Thrashers had stuck around. It would’ve also helped the Vegas Golden Knights win the Presidents’ trophy in their inaugural season (2017-18) with 129 total points and they would’ve won that year’s Stanley Cup and then another Presidents’ trophy 3 years later and would’ve beaten the Islanders in game 7 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final and the Golden Knights would’ve won a division title in each of the 2 years in between, especially, if we had actually won the Cup in 2012 and 2015 and the Los Kings had won the Cup in 2013 and the Colorado Avalanche had beaten us in 2014 and Chicago Blackhawks had won the Cups in 2016 and 2020 because then Justin Williams would’ve gone to the Windy City in 2015 to play with Kane, instead of going to our nation’s capital to play with Alex Ovechkin. This also means that Kaner gets 52 goals and 135 total points in that 2015-16 season and adds to his Art Ross and Hart trophies, by also sharing the Maurice Richard trophy with Ovi and the Hawks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in Chicago and Kaner wins the Conn Smythe trophy. Then, the following year, Kaner gets 52 goals, again and for the 2nd straight year, shares the Maurice Richard trophy with Ovi, while getting 129 total points. Then, in 2018-19, Kaner gets 52 goals again, but this time, with 120 total points and wins another Maurice Richard trophy and another Art Ross trophy. Then, the following year, Kane gets 52 goals again, this time, with 80 assists for 130 total points and another Art Ross and Maurice Richard trophy, this time, sharing that Maurice Richard trophy with Sidney Crosby and with it, the Hawks beat the Islanders in 5 games in the 2020 Stanley Cup Final and Kaner, again, wins the Conn Smythe trophy. Not to mention, assuming that Martin Brodeur sticks around and surpasses Johnny Bower and Maurice Roberts for the oldest goalie to ever play the game and the New Jersey Devils keep Ilya Kovalchuk, the Devils finish with 114 total points and the top seed in the Eastern Conference in their 1st season under head coach Bruce Boudreau. The Devils, then, lose the 2018 Stanley Cup to the Regular Season champion then-expansion Golden Knights in game 7.

  10. My Friend: I'm picking Mark Messier as head coach. An entire team with his discipline can win the cup. And keep Panarin and Tarasenko . I hate to see Kreider(?) go. Salary Cap is a bummer. Kane is history. May I use a Bklyn Dodger statement? "Wait 'till next year."
