Gawanke scolds NHL team: “I ripped my ass open”
Germany

National defender Leon Gawanke made the leap to North America a few years ago. He returns for the new season and criticizes ex-club Winnipeg Jets in clear words.

After four years with the Winnipeg Jets, Gawanke clearly had a lot of frustration that he was venting. “I’m definitely not going another year there. That’s it now,” said the 23-year-old at the World Cup in Finland and Latvia.

Gawanke was drafted by the club from the Canadian province of Manitoba, but has only been used in the Manitoba Moose farm team in the second-rate AHL since 2019. “You never accept something like that if you perform year after year and sacrifice yourself and then aren’t even rewarded,” said Gawanke.

In the past AHL season, he scored 20 goals as a defender and scored 45 points in 68 main round games. “I worked my ass off there for four years, to put it in German, and wasn’t rewarded. That’s obviously frustrating, especially when I see who gets a chance.”

“There is still hope that they will trade me”
For the new season, Gawanke signed with the Adler Mannheim , should no other NHL team take notice of him. “There’s still hope that they’ll trade me,” Gawanke said, referring to the Jets who continue to hold the NHL rights to him.

At the World Cup, Gawanke has the chance to draw attention to himself in the next few games with Germany. After the three narrow defeats at the start of the tournament, the defender is determined: “Now there are no more excuses.”

The hardest chunk of the remaining four opponents in the preliminary round has to be defeated on Thursday evening with Denmark. The Danes have NHL star Nikolaj Ehlers in the squad and Gawanke knows him from the Winnipeg Jets. “He’s one of the fastest players in the world. His shot on the power play is world class.”

Hmm well that doesn’t sound good, you can tell he’s pretty pissed with the Jets org

Another day, another player asking for a trade.

My guess is Gawanke has a NTC to not come to Winnipeg, right? Ya.

“I worked my ass off”…not…”I ripped my ass open”

    What awful imagery.

  4. While I don’t know if he would have had a spot on the jets, or any NHL team, he and all of the rest our young players don’t get the chances to come up and prove themselves, which in turn makes them unhappy and wanting to leave.

That’s on cheveldayoff. Draft and develop. For what? For other teams because we never give them opportunity to play on the NHL?

There really was only one player who questionably passed Leon on the Jets depth chart, Logan Stanley who got his shot first because of his size. Unfortunately Gawanke wasn’t even the best Dman on the AHL team. He absolutely had a fantastic on the Moose but he is also the only one of the top 4 D to not spend at least a month with the big club. If he was ready and their best option he would have got it. Samberg did, Morrissey did Charot did, Trouba did Poolman did, and unfortunately they lost Kovacevic to waivers before they could give him his shot.

Each team drafts 7 players a year. Only 1 or 2 usually make it per draft, leaving 5-7 players on the outside. This is nothing new. It’s a tough league to crack.

Lol ok. This is a dude that would be maybe number 8-9. We got lucky reg season with injury for D so we never got that deep on the prospect list.

Go get paid where you can. And he will back home.

Anyone coming here saying this is further indictment of the Jets org is just axe grinding

Draft and destroy! Let’s get another replacement level veteran to plug the holes young guys can do!
