    2. Orr
    3. Lemiuex
    4. Howe
    5. *Crosby*
    6. Richard
    7. Bossy
    8. Béliveau
    9. Brodeur
    10. *Ovechkin*

    Crosby and Ovechkin

  2. I know it’s a discussion on active players, and he currently (well, most recently, who knows about next year) plays for the Rangers, but seeing Kane in a Rangers jersey in this discussion just doesn’t feel right. Didn’t make much of an impact after the move and everything you can bring up about him that make him worthy of this list, he did in Chicago.

I think Free Agent Jaromir Jagr should be considered…

You need to submit your top 10 list for this to count.

It’s easy to say “he’s top 10” but when it comes down to it, that means removing someone currently in the top 10. The other issue is, most of us haven’t seen Orr play, let alone the players before him. Recency bias is always a thing.

Top 10? Sid and Ovi, McDavid will make it assuming he even somewhat continues how he has been.

Why do people assume guys like Gretzky and Lemieux wouldn’t approach the game and preparation differently if they played in the current era. Most All Stars from the past would be All Stars in this era because simply, they would put in the work necessary to succeed

bergeron has never been a top 10 player in the league any season, nevermind all time top 10

  8. Flex1855

Only ovechkin being second in goals and that’s a stretch in watered down league full of minor Leaguers

  9. sokocanuck

By position, specific attribute or overall?

Obviously Sid, Ovi and McDavid are there in an overall sense, IMO.

You might be able to argue EK for top 20 defenseman.

    Defensive/two way? Bergeron.

    Playoff performers? Drai/PKane/Kuch maybe

It’s almost impossible to compare players from different eras. The only thing we can really do is look at how far above the average were certain players (i.e. how much better were Gretzky and Crosby from the average player during their era). Equipment, nutrition, training, rules, lifestyle, and many other factors change over time. Would Crosby have been even better in the 80s if he had an enforcer with him on his line and he had worse defence/goaltending to play against? Or would he be worst because he’d be smoking a pack in the locker room and playing with a wooden stick? Who knows.

For what it’s worth, I did my best at comparing *stats* across different eras. What I did was acquire the goals per game for every year dating back to 1917/18, then listed a player’s average goals per game throughout their career (i.e. Gretzky’s was 3.5 and Lemieux’s was 3.2). Assuming the average career for great players is 20 years, I took the average goals per game from the last 20 years (2.84), divided that by each player’s average GPG during their career, and multiplied it by each stat to get an idea of how their stats would look in today’s game.

Some of my findings for era-adjusted stats (still need to update after this past year):

Lemieux has the highest points per game (1.67), Gretzky is second (1.56), McDavid is third (1.38), Crosby is sixth (1.26).

Lemieux has the highest goals per game (0.67), Matthew’s is second (0.61), Ovechkin is third (0.61).

Patrick Roy is second in SV% (0.925), Hasek is fifth (0.924), Brodeur is 15th (0.915).

Kane in blue is really killing me right now.

Of the guys up there, Ovi, McDavid and Crosby for sure. Bergeron, Pasta, Kane, Draisital, Hedman and Kucherov are top 30. Makar needs a bit more under his belt before a placement and Karlsson is a no based on his injuries

  13. RSlashLazy

Sid and Ovi, no questions asked. I also think McDavid is there now too. He’s only 26 and he’s already had a 150 point season in todays NHL. You may say he’s too young to be in the top 10 but he’s only played 88 less games than Bobby Orr has.

  14. Tiger5804

It’s hard to say who would be in the top 10 for me because I haven’t watched all the greats in their prime. Still, I’d say McDavid is a lock and Crosby probably makes it as well. I wouldn’t put Ovi in since his game isn’t well rounded, but I wouldn’t blame anyone for including the best goal scorer of all time. I also thought momentarily about whether Vasilevskiy should be considered, but in the end, he’s probably not the #1 goalie of all time, so it’d be tough to include him and whoever else is more deserving as a goalie.

Sid and Ovie… Mcdavid is well on his way to getting there too but needs to continue on his current trajectory for a few more years. Makar could get there but it’s way too early in his career to say with any confidence.

  16. water_and_ice_23

I hate him but Crosby is the only one I’d consider out of those guys at this time. Ovi’s great and I like him more but I’d absolutely take Sid over him if I was drafting for a team and knew what I know now.

  17. yosoyboi

Top ten is Gretzky, Mario, Orr, Jagr, Crosby, Lidstrom, Ovechkin, Bourque, Hasek, McDavid.

By the end of his career, McDavid will be considered somewhere between 2-4 best player, but I don’t think anyone will ever deny Gretzky being the greatest.

  18. Straight-Plate-5256

Sid or ovi. Maaaybe McDavid (he 100% will be by the time his career is over/ as lond as the other two but personally idk if he’s top 10 all time just yet. Needs a cup and maybe a conn Smythe to Crack it IMO)
There’s a couple other guys that have the potential to Crack it at some point but not as of right now

  19. Constant-Squirrel555

    Crosby and Ovie.

Everyone else has a few gaps in their resume. McDavid winning one cup will put him in top 10.
