After some discussion the officials decided this was worth the automatic two minute minor for delay of game. Personally I think they did a remarkable job determining this was even Brodie’s stick that hit the puck. As for the penalty, have your say!

Fine … sure — call this a penalty. Follow the very letter of the law. BUT ONLY AFTER YOU DO SO FOR THE 60 MINUTES OF REGULATION TIME. These officials were a disgrace. The Staal elbow to Marner?? No call. The interference on Kerfoot leading up to the first goal?? No call. So many calls that could have been made. And should have. But the league has a serious credibility problem. It is disgusting. It is the reason why fans are tuning out more and more. And these are the easiest and most obvious of calls they are blowing. With 4 sets of eyes on the ice, more off ice in Toronto doing video review … but they so very rarely have a full game they can say they didn't get wrong. Just terrible. Amateurish, at best. And I am talking Sunday beer league amateur level officiating. Then again, maybe they are all just drunk and cannot see straight. Or maybe people are correct and the NHL and the Draft are just fixed. I would not put it past Gary Bettman.
If this was called a delay of game penalty the officials got it wrong. Yes Brodie was the last person to touch puck knocking it out of play, but the puck went out of play at the bench area. The puck would have hit the glass on the way out if the glass extends to the bench area. So in that case no penalty.

Complete miss on this one by the league. There is no shooting motion in this situation which is actually in the rule that a player has to shoot or throw the puck over the glass with intent. To think there was an intentional attempt to knock the puck out of the playing area is a massive stretch to logic. But it is the NHL after all. It could happen exactly the same way 5 times in game 1 of the East and won't be called once.
Leaf fans don't seem to remember that Mitch Marner did something very similar in 2021. That game the Habs went on to beat the leafs in overtime and would eventually go on to win that series. If you're looking for consistency from the leafs in the post season there you have it.
I have never waivered in my belief that this was the stupidest penalty ever invented and that this would lead to unjust outcomes in big games. The NHL is the "fake wrestling" of major sports!
No one here understands the delay of the game penalty, lol. I agree it was soft given they didn't call so many obvious penalties, but this is not the wrong call.
The least egregious blown call, but still a blown call. If that was at the main glass, it wouldn't have gone over it, and the bench is supposed to be ruled differently than the rest of the rink.

Remember folks, in the NHL this is called a penalty in overtime, but you’re totally allowed to grab and hold the stick of a defender right in front of the opposing goal, preventing that player from being able to make a defensive play, so that your team mate can walk in for a scoring chance. 👍🏻
This rule is moronic.. it's gotten so far from the original intention, which was to penalize players for INTENTIONALLY chipping it over the glass to stop play. To penalize a player who swings at a lose puck in a group of other players, especially in front of the team benches…. at that point it's not performing it's original intent. So many rules in the NHL have become needlessly convoluted and written ambiguously with no real intention.. other than to allow room for the NHL's incompetent refs to escape blame.
The fix was in it's too expensive to fly a team to Canada from the US

Dont get me wrong Toronto absolutely got outplayed but fuck me the refs were clearly in one corner with marching orders lol. Its so rigged. Im done with the NHL and professional sports. I’ll be honest, I thought the puck over glass penalty wasn’t a thing where the benches are. I thought it was defensive zone only, and straight out over the glass (but not the benches glass). I have had yet another rule clarified in an elimination game. (I’ve been a hockey fan a long time too.)

That is so phucking stupid to call that. Spot on that ticky tack but so off on no goal. Ref no where near net and how could u blow whistle that quick. Then OT gudas holding stick. Every phucking year playoff hockey is great and refs are 4 blind mice. Linesman can make calls or be consulted but never are. Horrible and I have no team just a hockey fan. Is boarding not a penalty anymore. Guys are getting almost knocked out and nothing or 1 game suspension. I played at highest levels and this is just horrible. Give me the old refs with one referee never this bad. Bring back John Mccauley

What infuriates me about this event is that Florida's BARKHOV SWATTED THE PUCK INTO THE STANDS NOT BRODIE!!!!! It was plain as day to me at the time and EVEN MORE OBVIOUS WITH THE REPLAYS. It was the NO BRAINER CALL OF THE YEAR that this should've been Power Play for Leafs. What really got me is how EVERYONE missed it !!!…the Refs, the play by play announcers, all the post game analysis everywhere NOBODY noticed it. I very nearly lost my dinner Friday night i became so physically sick over it. Why on earth isn't this review-able? I shut the game off right after the call went against the LEafs, I couldn't watch anymore. Makes me never want to watch another NHL game again.
