I agree with your overall point. The media has an overbearing tendency to overblow everything they report on to sensationalize for ratings. It’s not as much of a story that’s been reported on.
But…I also have a surname that make people want to abuse it in an attempt to be funny without thinking about how I feel about it or care if they might offend me. Got to tell you… it got old real quick and I do not appreciate the crude humor at my expense. But it’s a fact of life that there are too many assholes who could give a crap about me or anyone else but themselves.
That being said, the apology should be just between the two of them and Anderson should not have to apologize to the whole world. I have learned to live with it over my 60 years and ignorant idiots will be ignorant idiots and no amount public scrutiny will ever fix that.
BTW, Whitecloud got emotional not because of the comment but when talking about his heritage. Nothing to do with the issue that started the whole thing.

While i can agree people are way too sensitive these days; this is actually pretty disrespectful; speaking for myself who’s last name has no meaning lol those from the indigenous culture – their names mean something – like a samurai has honour in being a warrior; or a greece with the gods; the names given to them are special – its been passed down and represents that persons place in that culture – i would be littlefatbear .. so when you attack that persons name; its not just a name its an attack on all of those things; and not being aware of that is part of the problem especially if you want to call yourself proficient at your job covering athletes from all over the world; including and especially the marginalized groups.
