Yes! Bridge deal at 4.5 x 2, if he performs at the same rate or better, then he would get his big boy contract.
I'm not a Habs fan, but Caufield is not going to be traded. He is definitely in the longer term picture for the team. The problem is that the team is already close to the cap, so they are probably negotiating salary and term. The team probably wants 8 years and Caufield wants a bridge. The team is already over the cap..the team has almost no room to sign Caufield. PLUS there are still 3 rFAs to sign on top of Caufield's contract. Most likely they will use this draft to do some salary dumps….

Dunno if a 8 years deal is the best for anyone. 4 years plus 1 year option seems to be what is needed. I would love to get Chicago's #1 and get Bedard, that would be awesome, but not to the price of that number 22, anyone or everyone else but him. It is obvious that GOOOOAAAALLLL Caufield loves to play hockey and loves Montreal, that alone is a real value and important enough not to send him anywhere.
Montreal has enough wealth in terms of prospects to trade with Chicago, and with 98 going there, he will feel alone for years to come. You cannot send a potential superstar like Bedard to a last place team like Chicago. As we all know(look at all the suspicious/obscur ''injuries'') during 22-23 season Montreal was tanking to try to get 98 in. Stats are clear for the past 40 years, that most teams who drafted #1 did not win the Cup within the next 10 years, except mainly for Pittsburgh.
Montreal needs Bedard! Trade everything including the Bell Center Zamboni, except 22.
