    The whole "player is born here so player is going to play here" idea is moronic. That goes for players born in Arizona as well as players born in Ontario. As a Leafs fan I don't assume Connor McDavid is gonna play here just because he's from the GTA. If the Leafs trade Matthews it'll be for the best return they can get not where Matthews wants to go.

    I'm hoping Matthews stays. If he leaves, let him come to LA or Arizona – I agree. A Leafs team without Matthews and Marner and less offensive powerhouses would become a mid team IMHO, which is why I'll keep saying it – focus on overhauling defence and flanks, replace Murray, let Holl become a UFA, and retain our current Core 4.

    Matthews played like crap in Tempe AZ this season. He'd fill lots of seats there though. The league is all about money so it doesn't have to make sense to us.

    The problem with all this is the Leafs have until July 1 to trade Austin Matthews if they wish to otherwise the no movement part of his contract kicks in then they can't trade him in the final year of his contract. SO either the leafs sign him after July 1 or he walks and Leafs get nothing for him . Talk about getting caught between a rock and a hard place.

    As much as I want Auston Matthews to come here, I’d keep Schmaltz and Cooley since our rebuild is looking bright and there is no need to trade great assets for Matthews when we could get him in free agency.

    Dude, if Matthews is gone, we have Tavares as our #1 center…no bueno. If you're willing to trade Matthews, you might as well trade Marner and Nylander too for all the draft picks in the world because then you might as well admit it's a full on rebuild.

    Lol, so should the oilers trade McDavid and Draissitl if they dont win the stanley cup? Give your head a shake. And all those that think AM wants to play in AZ, also give your head a shake. Even if the Yotes could afford paying his upcoming contact, do you think he wants to play in a college hockey barn in the desert? For an organiztion thats just a shitshow?

    Leafs fanbase is delusional thinking there 10mil+ playoffs under achievers with almost expired contracts have any values on the market. All GM's around the league know that the Leafs are hancuffed. They are just gonna wait a year or two to get them for free or take their contracts off the Leafs cap for very very little if anything. Wake up Leaf fans, your cup window is now closed and you are entering a reconstruction phase that is gonna be even more painfull then the last 19 years with depleted high draft picks and a sub par prospect pool.

    If they can’t get a contract extension signed for Matthews before the No-clause in his current deal kicks in they 100% have to trade him.

    Yes you do want this to happen. This is exactly what the Leafs need. Unfortunately Arizona only has to wait one year to sign him at free agency so they won't pay that much. Maybe Schultz and this year's first. That's about it

    I think if Toronto does trade him it would probably be for Arizona's first-round picks this year (#6 and 12) given how high Arizona is on Cooley. Maybe Arizona would throw in someone like Geekie.

    Mathews stay in Toronto if you go to Arizona with the coyotes you’ll not be in the playoffs

    Matthews Marner and Tavares. Bye. Get some fresh blood that can produce consistently post season. Paying too much for too little. One year sure but 7 years naw son its time to go.

    Matthew’s isn’t going anywhere, since he’s the best player in the league in his mind the Leafs will pay him 15 million per season over 8 years. Players don’t get paid for scoring in the playoffs, he’s a Selke guy and best goal shooter in league so 15 mill is good enough for the golden boy.

    P.S. every single season Leafs fans and media claim Marner and Matthew’s are the best defensive forwards in the league!
