Leafs Playoffs End with Disappointment for 7th Straight Season

This really does feel like it is an annual ritual, questioning where it went wrong in the playoffs after a very good regular season.

  1. Really would stick with Toronto another year before firing GM along with Coach. Matt Murray not being able to play but Woll gave them a chance to win. Guys getting paid like 10M or more in Cap can't get a Goal or produce? Tkachuk already has Florida Panthers record for Assists :). Sure miss Huberdeau the scrub Calgary overpaid resulting in firing HC and GM. Bruins won 65 games lost 3 to 1 lead. Maple Leafs managed to win over Tampa could have won the Florida Series. Goalie didn't play great or getting injured. Either way I think their window is 1 to 3 years before it closes for another decade. Bunting does not get any breaks or calls its amazing ;). The expectations are too much. They richest team in NHL. League has no reason for them to win it ;).

  2. Keep Dubas if he wants to stay, but not too keen on keeping Keefe. Absolutely trade a couple of the core 5. I wonder if Chicago would trade their first round Bedard pick for Matthews, btw he would look great in a Hawks uniform and I believe he’d be happier in a big market American team and I do want Matthews to be happy, and Nylander with Murray OR Holl, our first round in 24 and second round in 25 for Chicago’s first round this year, the coveted Bedard pick, Chicago’s second pick in 24, and third round pick in 25.

  3. The Leafs missed their chance to rework their core last off season when Tkachuk was there to be had in a trade with Calgary. Now it is sort of ironic that his new team in Florida is the team to knock them out this year. Now Dubas and the Leafs are stuck between a rock and a hard place this off season. With not much available on the FA market, and too little cap space to do anything major. To free up cap space they will have to trade one of the core 4. But they will be doing so from a position of weakness this year and other teams will not be inclined to give them fair market value in return. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out for the buds. But it's not a good situation at all.

  4. I'm not a Leafs fan, and I'm glad they lost, but that Gudas stickhold on the overtime winner should have been called.

  5. I wouldn’t bring back Matthews. I either trade him or let him walk. You can get a lot for him, and he hasn’t done enough in the moments when it matters most to warrant my team paying him once his contract is done. Nylander has done everything and then some that the leafs asked of him. He HAS to re-sign. As to who you get to replace Matthews, I’d go with a bunch of draft picks. And maybe try to sneak in a second line center. You get those future assets, and hopefully your team never falls off because you’ll be able to always bring new young talent in.

  6. Interesting will be if they fire Keefe, re-sign Dubas, and do nothing else. Because Dubas consistently pushed Keefe during his tenure, which happened to overlap with some of the most significant development time for the young stars (could include Sundin since his potential upside was much higher). Not to mention the talk that Dubas inserted himself in coaching philosophy–Keefe not being allowed to be harsh on core players. On the flipside of that, which team is Chomping at the bit to hire Dubas right now? Keeping in mind Dubas will want his own scouting & development personnel.

  7. The media in Toronto is a poison, all the media availability and interviews and all the other bs is soul draining and counter-productive, always has been in this city.

  8. Hockey Guy didn't like the Tavares signing for the leafs at the time, way too much cap used, and also said the Islanders could be better off . . . .

  9. The reality of it is that Tavares will be impossible to move unless the other team is compensated for an effective cap dump and he has an NMC. I can understand why Tavares got the contract that he did. Every team at the time was offering the same thing. We're just seeing the tail end of his career. So Tavares will play out the rest of his career in Toronto. Nylander is one of the best contracts in the league – no way he's being moved.

Even if they fire Dubas and Keefe, the real question is if the new management is really going to trade Marner or Matthews? It seems its the only way out of the current situation. Matthews with 0 goals in the playoffs contrasted with Marner's bloated contract makes me believe that it's Matthews on the hot seat. Both have NMCs so they would have to waive to be moved. In the Florida series, Marner was absolutely abused by the Florida guys – Florida was physical and used their size to frustrate him. Marner is facing the similar issues Johnny Gaudreau had in the western playoffs.

The team needs to shore up the D pairings and the middle 6. Morgan Rielly pales in comparison to the top D-men in the league (Makar, Fox, Heiskanen) and isn't the best offensive enabler on the PP either (Josi, Karlsson, Doughty, QHughes). Holl is definitely not good enough to justify playing in a top pairing role and he can't quarterback a powerplay so he should be moved or be the 7th D . Leafs should go to the market to trade for like a Morissey/Dunn type player who can QB the PP and is solid on both ends. If Rielly gets injured, they need a backup or vice versa. Technically, TJ Brodie held this role in Calgary but Keefe has elected not to play him in this role . Sandin was good on the PP but meh overall – we traded him anyways. They can't afford a defensive questionable PP specialist like Erik Gustaffson when they already have Holl.

Kerfoot, Acciari amd Bunting are probably gone. I hope they could somehow keep Ryan O'Reilly as I think a full season could help him mesh 100%. There's no other centres other than ROR in free agency this year. Toews is basically done. They need to add on 2 forwards on the ROR's wing who can produce and be effective defensively. Ideally, these guys can play up or down the lineup if Jarnkrok is being committed to 1st LW. David Kampf has been stellar and he needs to be resigned. ZAR should return as well. Jarnkrok for 2M/year is fantastic – he does it all and is exactly what any team needs in the playoff when other players get injured. Then there's goaltending (Murray should not be more than a backup.. I can't believe we even tried Mrazek). Hoping we can keep Samsonov as Woll has a good but small sample size. The FA goalie market looks pretty rough.

Call me crazy but if Matthews were to be traded, it would have to be Arizona – don't know if Arizona gets blinders for the "hometown boy" angle but the only way to make this trade work is if Matthews signed an extension and if it involved Clayton Keller/Schmaltz + Boyd/Hayton to the Leafs to fill the centre role and get some value back on the wing. It would probably need to involve more pieces to make it worthwhile for Arizona. Keller + Schmaltz have incredible production for their contracts.

  10. It’s painful as a Leafs fan because you look at how much money they demanded and didn’t give us any discounts but we’re in Toronto… these guys promote IPhones, Medicine, gambling apps, hockey gear, they will get paid to put their face on anything’s. They make what they nickel and dimmed us for on their average sponsorship. I’d understand Columbus or Arizona having to pay their stars more to stay but this is a staple franchise of the NHL where they can become legends, and they wouldn’t have hurt financially if they look less.

  11. They got out of the first round…..

Yeah let’s just gloss over that Tampa gave that series away more than Toronto winning

  12. I think a major component of pressure in Canadian markets is the media and not so much about the passion and expectation of fans. Case in point, the national media attention that the Leafs get is out of proportion (whether this is deserved because of population or fanbase size is beside the point.) to other Canadian teams and they seem to perform below expectations more than the others. I can imagine how exhausting it is for players to be out there answering the same dumb questions, especially those that don't seem comfortable on camera and being grilled about their feelings. Marner comes to mind. I don't know about other sports but I think the hockey media's demands for access is crazy and I think players need more protection in Canadian markets.

  13. Marner is a fantastic regular season player. His STYLE doesn't translate to the playoffs. The NHL regular season is like the ice capades. The Stanley Cup playoffs are like rollerball on ice.

  14. Imagine Matthews goes to Arizona and that season they get to the Western finals. Double it if Nylander also leaves and finds more success immediately.

  15. Toronto needs 2 clean house 🏠 if they keep the same management and core 🙄 then we're having the same convo next spring. It's a debacle. Every year it's getting old.

  16. Good, thought provoking, and interesting video.👍👍👍👍👍 I will point out that I think you are using the word analytics incorrectly. I think you are using the word "analytics" as being synonymous with "statistics". Statistics are the numbers players produces. Analytics are the determination of what the stats WITH the non statistical factors mean and trying to quantify what those determinations mean. But overall, I enjoyed your thought process in this video.

Can't fix moxy, gut check, or heart. Either you have it or you don't.

  17. I cant wait for the leafs offseason, it will be fascinating no matter what they do, people will be angry no matter what they do. They are the most interesting team this offseason.

  18. As a leafs fan, the only players they try to resign is o’reilly, schenn and acciari. Try to trade Marner or Matthews if you can. Get rid of Murray and go with woll and Samsonov as a 1a 1b tandem. I hate to see a lot of these players go but what other choice do you have. Marner is your best bet to get a return but I think nylander, woll, schenn, and Reilly are the only players in this playoff that showed consistently they wanted to go further.

  19. I know my opinion is not very much and some will say to old fashion. They need to cut their hair and facial hair as well. They need to show to the building on game day in a suite and tie home and away. It is a team sport and the competition is on the ice and not who looks the best. I am a Lou fan when it comes to discipline. Just my thoughts on the matter.

  20. The Shanahan plan has failed and failed again. Cleary, the President, GM, and Head Coach don't have the answers for this team. So, is the board ready to make changes?

  21. is there anything stopping them from trading someone like Tavares to arizona, then they trade him back with salary retained?
