Bill Guerin unplugged: Why Evason is safe, Vegas trip regrets, Gustavsson’s contract, more

> I like Dean. He’s a good coach. I do believe in him. Not every coach is going to have instant success. Just like players. Coaches get better every year, they get more experience. Dean has not been a head coach in this league for a long time. He’s still learning as well. I do say this. He hasn’t gotten past the first round. But I look back at the good stuff that he’s done. He’s coached a team that’s missing two big players because of the cap hits. It’s not an excuse, but a fact.

> I’m very confident we’ll get something done. I feel like Gus, I know he’s very happy here, he wants to be in a Minnesota Wild jersey. We’re going to get on it very, very soon, and I’m confident we’ll get it done. There’s always challenges, if it’s not money, it’s term. If it’s not term, it’s money. We’ll see how the Vezina voting and all that stuff goes. He had a great year.

We’re going to see. I mean, he’s been coached. It’s much harder to come into this league as a defenseman. Apparently, winger is the easiest, I’ve been told (Guerin is a former NHL winger). He’s going to have to realize that he’s competing for his job, for his spot in the lineup. Are you willing to do the things you need to do to keep it? And that’s for everybody. You’re not guaranteed a spot. If you’re not playing well and you’re not doing the things your team needs you to do, there’s a good chance you won’t be in the lineup. There’s a point with young players in general where the old saying is, ‘You can lead the horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.’ We can tell them, we can show them, we can bring them through these steps, all these things. But there becomes a point where he has to do it, and he’s at that point. He’s got to really dig in here and do the things he knows he has to do.”

Pretty telling his answer on Addison. I still hope they bring him back though, only because I would prefer if they go all-in on the youth movement next year.

Relieved that Firstov hasn’t completely abandoned the franchise, he gave up on Iowa way too quick but has had a great year in the KHL at 21. I’m hoping Guerin can convince him to come back, we need young skilled players on ELC’s.

Teams with talent can sleepwalk through the regular season and make the playoffs. Dean getting embarassly outcoached every postseason is obvious. If he fails to do *something* next post season, he should be gone.
