With a lot of talk of the current 1st overall pick for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft being held by a placeholder team, let’s go over what will happen if the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs—and in turn the play-in series’—get cancelled, via Elliotte Friedman on Twitter. The projected 1st overall pick is Alexis Lafreniere, and man, if any of these 8 teams get him, then it’d be a huge boost for their franchise.

The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:

1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. I saw a better way to award the top picks that seems like a much much better idea, and would account for teams that just have one off year, or perennially bad teams that did slightly above average.

Take the last 3 to 5 years total points in this format to determine where they fall in said seasons draft (3 years is probably better).

Number the teams by point percentage from worst to 10th worst 1-10.

Team 1 gets 10 points, team 2 gets 9 points, team 3 gets 8 points… and so on until team 10 gets 1 point.

Total up the 3 years of points and the resulting total is where the new picks are.

I think this is a significantly better format- and it would still discourage tanking as you’d have to completely gut a team for multiple years to get the 1st overall pick, so you’d be in a rebuild anyways. This would stop teams from making the Conference Finals or Winning/Playing for the Stanley Cup one year, having a bad season it a season where they had injuries to key players, and end up getting a top prospect to add to an already great team. It should theoretically speed of the rebuild of actually bad teams, and there really isn’t much you could do to make it unfair.

  2. Come on guys was 1000s of ppl in the streets yesterday but we are not allowed sports anymore , y'all getting played

  3. Whats interesting is Vancouver and Nashville are lower in the league by point percentage than Columbus and Florida.
That being said I agree with the decision as its always been based on non playoff teams only.

  4. I hope to god that MTL gets Lafrenière, we seriously need it! The last offensive superstar that we had was Guy Lafleur and he retired in 1984 ffs!!!! The MTL Canadiens genuinely need a great offensive player, and a superstar like Lafrenière is the perfect fit for the team, we truly need to win the first round pick this year!

  5. Just picture “Crosby up Malkin over to Lafreniere….he shoots he scores” yup thats a possibility.

  6. Um wouldnt the odds of winning the top pick been a whole lot smaller individually for each team like 1-4% instead of the 16% of just needing one of these teams to hit the jackpot? I would say doing the re-lottery with the normal odds of winning would be better. Cuz then it makes no sense to why this format was put into play

  7. If there is no cup the pick sould go to the jets the ball pulled for it. Or all teams should be able too put in for it and if pick 2 and 3 want in they loss thouse picks and Detroit moves up 2 or 3 if they are not the winner

  8. I knew the NHL would find a way to screw this up. This is why you should have just done a lottery with the bottom 7 teams. This is absolutely unfair.

  9. He should go to Detroit or ottawa.nhl messed up the lottery given the current status of the season

  10. Could the Ranger's end up with the number one pick? Could be interesting. Their top 6 would be a handful to deal with. Young and talented…. Could be interesting.

  11. Quite simple…..it should be the Red Wings, as it should have been already. But this ridiculous way of doing things had the team most in need, the last place team by a mile…..pick 4th.
