Gary Bettman conducts the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery



NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman presides over the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery from Secaucus, New Jersey. Participants in the Draft Lottery included all teams that did not qualify for the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs (or the teams that have acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff teams).

Two draws were conducted to determine the order of selection for the first 16 picks in the First Round of the Draft. Among the changes to the Draft Lottery format announced on March 23, 2021, there was a limit on the total number of selections (10) a team participating in the Draft Lottery could “move up” in the event it won one of the Lottery Draws. Thus, only the top 11 seeds were eligible to receive the first overall selection.

    Make it interesting… All teams out of the playoffs get a equal shot at the #1 pick. All other picks can be based on ranking but it would fix the tanking issue and really make the lottery interesting

    Yeah super believable… this is such a sham… it should be done infront of a live audience and live streamed this is so ridiculous.

    Why don’t we do a perfect lottery by seeding. By drawing out the seed of the ownership group and who has the least wins the lottery.

    They took detailed care to try to show it's not rigged. But how do we know if any of the balls isn't injected with any substance to produce a desired outcome?

    Is there a PROVEN scientific reason that shows a draft lottery is even necessary? There are years of data now. Why not hire a statistician to do an analysis to see if the point spread from top teams to bottom teams is different before and after the lottery was introduced? If teams are tanking on purpose, there should be a bigger points spread. Is there?
