Josh Morrissey Gets Two Year Deal with Jets

This is a good deal for both sides. The young blueliner will get paid a lot more in his next deal.

  1. I like the idea of a bridge contract becoming more popular. It helps manage the cap, let's a GM be more sure of what he's buying, and maintains your core for another push for not much cost.

  2. Good/safe deal although he could end up in a PK Subban situation when he gets shipped off after the deal but The jets have the depth and they’ll get something in return that’s good if that happens and that’s just a hypothetical and all in all good deal

  3. Hockey Guy can just rack up the comments by making a tiny mistake and then having every third viewer making a comment to correct him lmao

  4. Morrissey is quietly becoming the new marc edouard vlasic. Very underrated player

  5. Nurse is asking for $4MM. for 2 years. Chiarelli values him at $3MM. Wouldn't be surprised to see them ink the deal at $3.5 MM/2 years.

  6. Everyone knows what you mean don't worry about it. Great news as always!

  7. Also, teams cannot spend next year the salary cap that they "saved" from this year. The cap resets each summer.

  8. i'm happy they signed him. never been a huge trouba fan, so i'd love to see him traded for some cheap young prospect or something to free up cash for laine and connor. also, who's this "nurse" you're talking about?

  9. Hey if your looking for content. Would love to hear your thoughts on the nylander situation in Toronto.

  10. This is a sort of happy-medium contract that might actually be an instance where the bridge is the best deal for both sides. It gives the Jets more cap flexibility in the short term, since they have Laine, Connor and Trouba up next year (only Trouba is arbitration eligible), plus Myers as a UFA. You want to skip the bridge deal for your top players, if possible. Buy as many UFA years as you can while you can. Getting Laine on an 8-year, $76 million deal is essential (buying 4 UFA years, and keeping him a Jet until he is 29 years old). Connor is less important, but still more crucial than Morrissey (in my opinion). Getting him under a similar term deal to Laine, buying up the same number of UFA years and keeping him under contract until he's 30 could still be the smart play though. That deal would probably cost the Jets in the $52 million range now. I think the best strategy for the TEAM is to sign them both ASAP, before they start lighting the lamp this year. Give Laine 9.5 million a year NOW because next summer you'll be paying $10.5 million AAV (or more). Similarly, Connor is worth signing at $6.5 million AAV now, because next summer he'll be worth $7.5 million (or more). Yes, they're not arbitration eligible yet, but given the trajectory of the average forward's career, these two are likely to keep improving their performance for several years (which is a scary thought consider how amazing they both are now). Signing them until at least the average forward's peak age (27-28) is imperative, but adding a couple years on to that (if possible) is smart considering how high their value will be on the open market for that extra year or 2 (i.e. they are emminently tradeable, if absolutely necessary).

The Jets are going to be in cap hell soon enough, with players (other than Laine and Connor) who look to be "possible core material" needing to be re-signed in the next 3 years. Myers and Trouba expire next year, Morrissey and Roslovic in 2 years, and Perreault and Byfuglien in 3 years: I think they'll be lucky to have 4 of those 6 players on the team to start the 21-22 season (and I bet they'll be Myers, Morrissey, Roslovic and Byfuglien, provided Buff takes a pay cut after his current deal expires, and he's 36 years old). Trouba doesn't seem to want to be a Jet long-term and that's okay, provided they get good value for him. And Perreault is a 40 point player for maybe another year or 2; moving him soon should be a top priority, especially if he starts the year hot, raising his value (he has the option of a 5-team no trade list). Finally, they need to figure out where Kulikov fits into the plan because he's consuming valuable cap dollars right now and not doing that much. And what about Chiarot – is he worth keeping, and what's the likely cost? Tanev, Copp, Dano and Morrow are all expendible right now, I think, unless something drastic happens this year.

  11. Laine ,Connor , trouba and the big guy Myers all need new contracts for next year with 23 mil in cap space . This will be tough . Makes me wonder if a trade is brewing to get rid of buff’s contract or trading kulikov? Good signing overall.

  12. It's fine THG, we all make mistakes. Back to Josh tho, I think he'll earn himself a nice long term deal in two years.

  13. As a player coming out there rookie deal, the player doesnt really have leverage, Jets are saying yep your good lets see how good
