Came across this on Tankathon and can’t figure it out – How is it possible for Montreal (or any of these teams) get the 3rd overall pick?

  1. It has something to do with a team in the 12-16 range winning the lottery and moving up 10 spots, not exactly sure all the semantics

It’s a really narrow chance, but, in theory Ottawa could win the first lottery and move up the max 10 spots to second place. If Montreal then won the second lottery they would win 3rd place because it wouldn’t be fair to bump the winner of the first lottery down.

Alright, so technically the first pick that is awarded through the lottery is the first pick overall. That being said, the “first pick” can be won by someone being positionned 12 through 16th, but they can only gain 10 spots, so if 12th wins the lottery they pick 2nd. That pick is now locked into 2nd place. The thing is after that they do a lottery for the 2nd pick. If the 12th team won the lottery, they’re locked on picking 2nd, so the winner of the 2nd lottery picks 3rd.

In short, Montreal can only pick 3rd if Ottawa (12th worst team) wins the first lottery, and then Montreal wins the lottery for the second pick

  4. Ottawa wins the lottery for #1 which moves them up 10 spots to #2. In that case, Anaheim stays #1 and the other lottery is a draw for #3.
