/r/hockey would just hella downvote but I dont understand

If he’s not injured, are we even talking about this? If he pops right back up and goes at Makar, literally nothing happens.

Why does Dumba throw a similar type hit (late that resulted in injury, mainly due to fall) and get no suspension?

Fucking silly lol. Whatever, fuck you DoPS

  2. BirdzzWentzzWagonn

Thank goodness for the inconsistent rulings. Dude has zero history of any malicious intent. Whistle not blown and lost puck with his eyes. Its interference, no less no more.

  3. Wkerscher

This is an “appease the new market” suspension…

  4. roscoparis

If he wasn’t injured, no one is talking about this. It’s under a microscope bc of the injury, but this type of contact happens constantly in playoffs. Does it make a legal hit by the rule book, no. Is it something that would normally have been called if there was no injury, probably not. Does this type of play often result in injury, no.

IMO the suspension is prob warranted considering the outcome, but I wouldn’t have been shocked if he only got a fine either. Unfortunate

  5. TantuG24

Yeah but Jeff Carter and I forgot who it was against St Louis can basically headhunt Cale.

Call me a homer but I do try and be as eivenkeeled as possible. Makar is a player with no history at all, actually goes out of his way to be be a role model and play with integrity.

He lost sight of the puck and thought the play was to continue so he finished his check, McCann had basically stopped playing hockey for a split second and so it looks a lot more egregious than it was intended to.

I don’t want anyone injured but I am just surprised the community is up in arms over this hit.

Not to mention, what sort of consequences were given out when Makar was blindsided by an ACTUAL malicious hit to the head earlier this year?

    Just so inconsistent

  7. Talinn_Makaren

Update your Makar bios and add gritty.

  8. Meh, that’s fair. It would have been a nothing play if McCann stayed in the play braced for it, but he didn’t and got smoked. Inadvertently dirty hit from a clean player. It happens. Let’s fight through it and win the next one.

  9. Can’t say I’m shocked. The NHL picks and chooses when to review shit, let’s talk about stamkos having no history but is actually a dirty player. The amount of people he has boarded (Girard was on of them) and to not even get reviewed is comical!

  10. Mackinnon29E

No big deal, just have to rely on Manson not fucking up EVEN MORE now… we’ll be fine..

  11. The inconsistency is absolutely mind boggling.

  12. dmark200

Does anyone know if Toronto can ring down to the refs and ask them to review an incident for a penalty? Because it seemed initially that the refs weren’t going to call anything here

  13. BirdzzWentzzWagonn

Time for Byram to elevate his game even more now. No pressure.

  14. Dan_Rogla

Bettman greasing palms to get that 7 game David vs. Goliath narrative rolling.

I hope the Avs wake up and destroy as much as possible from here on out.

  15. McCann knew the puck went out of play because he saw it, Makar had no idea, and without hearing a whistle, he did exactly what you’re supposed to do and play until the whistle. It’s only because McCann saw the puck go into the netting that he let up, which leads to him being vulnerable to the hit, which, in turn, leads to his injury! But Makar had no vicious or ill intent and if the whistle had blown as soon as the puck hit the netting, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.

IF ANYTHING, THE REF THAT FAILED TO BLOW THE WHISTLE AS SOON AS THE PUCK WENT OUT OF PLAY SHOULD BE SUSPENDED

  16. PapaDoughboy

I honestly am fine with this. It sucks but he made a dumb play that he didn’t need to and we gotta live with it. Cale has made 1000000 great plays. He’s allowed to make bc one dumb move, serve his suspension and move on.

Avs had no business going to OT last night yet they did. It’s going to be an absolute battle, but this team knows how to win games.

  17. soulslide

Anyone else see the Kraken cross check a helmet-less Rodrigues post-whistle last night & not even get called for a penalty? I’m not understanding how this is a suspension but cross checking a helmet less player from behind doesn’t even get a 2 min minor.

  18. lightsout5477

This is such fucking bullshit. Manson you need to light a fire under your ass and step it the fuck up more than you ever have in your life. I swear to god.

  19. anemic_royaltea

Fine with this, twas a boneheaded mistake

  20. pforsbergfan9

I think if he got the 5 and a game then he wouldn’t have gotten suspended. But because he got downgraded to a 2, he has to sit a game.

  21. Mammoth_Study3818

All those games without makar was in preparation for game 5. One of those games being a dub vs Seattle. It’s all part of the plan boys.

Anyways, extra couple days for him to heal from that cross check that was so hard it broke the stick. Which was not a penalty.

  22. scaremanga

Independently, I agree with a one-game suspension in terms of “game safety.” However, inconsistency is a huge problem and I disagree with it.

  23. Mess-Severe

    I agree with the ruling

Non dirty player made a dirty play, causing an injury.

    Moving on then…

  24. OldDogNewSkate

The NHL favoritism for Seattle will continue until morale improves!

At this point I am convinced there is no way they will let the new market lose their first playoff series.

  25. porschekid11

The fault lies with Makar to be sure the player he is hitting is eligible for the hit. He gambled and tried to time it right so he would land the hit when the puck comes to McCann, didn’t work out. That’s the way she goes. Sometimes she goes, sometimes it doesn’t. Makar tried to make a real sweet play but it didn’t work out how he thought it would. I don’t fault his decision making because this is a split second decision made in the moment and she didn’t go.

After watching the video, he ended up hitting an ineligible player. So….

The most I expected was a max fine and call it a day. We got Panther Fuck Boi laying cross checks AFTER the whistle and everyone clearly knows the period is over not getting suspended – WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

Fuck off DOPS – you are not keeping everyone safe, you are selectively picking on whomever whenever you decide to get involved. This is a bullshit call because there is no precident for a suspension based on all the shit that is not even penalized at the time, or fined/suspended in review by your jackass committee

  26. Anyone have the hit on Helm that’s knocked him out of the series?

JT Compher should of played dead after the Gorde hit last night. Same type of hit puck no where in sight wasn’t even called interference.

Last nights officials should go back to the AHL and never officiate another playoff or NHL game. They were pathetic. They didn’t even call this a penalty or blow the whistle for another few seconds after the hit.

I expect a ridiculous game from Cale in game 6 regardless of how game 5 goes. Don’t know what alternate reality we are living in where the baby faced assassin is a villain but I’m here for it!

  27. androsphere

Inconsistency aside, this does give him some rest. He didn’t look with it last night, so hopefully he comes back energized in game 6

  28. Canadian__Ninja

1 game is about what I thought it would be. You can’t be doing that. Gotta dig deep now

  29. Seattle has now received their baptism as a hockey team/fanbase:

    -Live through playoff overtime

-Get up in arms in a suspension/no suspension/suspension length debate

-Have an opponent who will be boo’d every time they touch the puck for the rest of his career.

It just so happens that it is again with a Denver based sports team: Dikembe pulls upset vs Sonics; Super Bowl 48; week 1 2014; week 1 2022; Russell Wilson trade

  30. jonnyb8717

Obviously McCann saw the pick go out of play and stopped playing.

Obviously Makar did not see the pick go out of play and followed Mann to the corner thinking he was chasing the puck to the corner and finished his check

Without a whistle from the refs to tell Makar the puck was out of play, he did what he thought was the correct hockey play on what he thought was a live puck.

    McCann got injured

    Makar got suspended

Tragic play all around; but the refs whistle prevents this from occurring

    Go Avs!

  31. Such fucking bullshit. Perfectly okay for Jeff Carter though, right? The NHL can fuck itself.

  32. BIGDINNER_

The video says the onus is on Makar to ensure the player has possession of the puck before making contact. Fair. But isn’t the onus *also* on the referee to blow the play dead rather than let both players continue on for a lengthy period of time thinking the play is still live?

It’s a lose lose situation. Check him – it’s a late hit and a penalty. Let the puck land by his feet – he gets a chance to score.

  33. VultureFundNumberOne

Alright downvote me if you want, but it’s probably the right move by the league (ALTHOUGH THE ISSUE IS CONSISTENCY IN THESE DECISIONS). My take is that the hit itself was fine, but Makar had no idea where the puck was, and thus he absolutely blasted a guy who wasn’t ready resulting in injury. I think it was an accident, the hit itself was clean, but the timing was so late and away from the play that they had to respond. Jeff carter had intention to injure, he should’ve been suspended, and although Makar has no history or intention, it ended up being bad enough the league needed to act.

  34. I think it was an honest mistake on a guy who had stopped playing and as a result got his head smacked against the glass. I think Cale should have been more aware of what was happening with the puck. I don’t mind the 1 game suspension, if the league is trying to crack down on hits that can cause head injuries. However, Cale is clearly a fair player who doesn’t play to injure. I also find it strange that there was no suspension on a similar play where Jeff Carter made direct contact with Makar’s head earlier in the season causing a concussion and missed time.

  35. SwissAperture

Call me crazy but I feel like this is honestly fair. Sure it’s not a malicious hit, but you can’t be throwing the body that hard if you have no idea where the is.
