Many changes ahead for DC.
It's disappointing to see the Capitals miss the playoffs again, but it's time to rebuild and come back stronger next year.
I think many knew a rebuild was due but last year they had so many injuries I don’t know if they are still a contender or not
This team needs Connor Bedard so badly. They are old, tired and uninspired. They have almost no legitimate prospects on the way. At least no game changers.
Of all the Lottery eligible teams, I feel like WSH needs Bedard the most.
If the NHL are wetting themselves THAT much over no Crosby and Ovechkin, this league is fucked. These two only have a few more years to go, and then what? We have a player like McDavid who is by far and away a much better generational talent than Crosby ever was, in yet the average Joe Sixpack down the street here in the USA have no idea who he is. That's on them for how they choose to market their rising stars versus their declining ones.
After Jan 1 the Caps went 14-24-5 in terms of wins that'd put us fourth last in the league I'm terms of points we were second last.
they had a very underrated deadline. As a fan it's weird not seeing them in the playoffs but I'd rather them sell off at the trade deadline to try and retool than do what the Penguins did
My take is that Ovechkin should just retire or leave before it gets embarrassing
Backstrom, Mantha, and kuzy contracts are killing us
Just seems right to have Washington and Pittsburgh fall off together
Capitals are an Interesting Team to see what happens as Darcy was pretty good I think he had like 5 SOs or something like that. Eh Crosby along with The Great 8 just are not marketing money anymore. Their time is over now its the new crop of Stars. They can track the Goal Record for Ovy otherwise what is there to do. Many dropped him for sponsors already I'm sure anyways. Washington was not that bad its just like Florida went on a surge while Detroit or Senators or Buffalo didn't get it done for issues in Net or so. Though this team maybe just needs another year or depth. They traded Orlov but Wilson was injured or missed most season. That is Key Player for them. Just needs a player to improve or trade or two to get back in Top 8 etc.

Hopefully a full off-season and training camp can help Backstorm rebound next year. However, the top 6 still needs an upgrade. First trade mantha somewhere and see if there are any takers for Kuzy. Package McMichael and a first for Nick Schmaltz in AZ, and then go sign someone like Ryan Donato to a 3/4 year contract. Protas and Alexeyev are both more than NHL ready as well so they need to be in the lineup next year.

ovi to arizona for picks is the best course of action for Washington. Garbage goals on the Power Play will not help the Capitals win games and the Yotes have an abundance of picks. Shift Mantha and Kuznetsov and Backstrom(really don't feel good saying this) if a team will take him broken down. They aint winning another one with the current top 6. Give the C to Carlson. Maybe shift Oshie but Caps do need at least one longtime fan favorite on the roster if he doesn't retire

As a neutral, my preseason prediction was wrong on the Caps. I thought they did a nice mini-retool last summer but injuries put paid to any playoff hopes .
They're still only a couple of shrewd moves from being back in the postseason conversation IMO. Cap space is an issue though
Ovi beating the all time goals record is all that matters. Can rebuild after.
I hope Irwin resigns, very underrated defensive defenseman and I’ve seen what he brings to the team at practices and on the bench. He’s a great guy off the ice, someone who can make a locker room feel more like a family. If they can keep the cap reasonable no reason not to let him return.
