In this video, I do a deep dive on Montreal Canadiens Blueliner Ben Chiarot. It was reported by multiple sources that the Maple Leafs are interested in trading for the big bruising defenseman. Using advanced stats, context and seeing where he’d fit in and what the cost would be, I try to determine whether or not the Leafs should be interested.

if they want a first you can show the habs the middle finger and move on …
chariott is garbage, petry and webber made him look good
Hey Man, Really appreciate your beakdowns, but is there any chance you could toss some labels over a screen shot of some of these graphs? All these short forms and graphics suffer from the classic Math brain communication failure, they read like Linear A script, you know the one we haven't decoded haha.
Despite some “leafs fans” saying that this guy is bad if still love to have him, yeah Montreal is not doing good at all this year but it not bens fault. Dude can play a lot better than hill and dermott. I wouldn’t give a first but I’d still be willing to give something sizeable
I’m not fixing my spelling mistakes just know that I hate autocorrect
While he'd very possibly be rejuvenated by a trade to team like the Leafs, his declining foot speed leaves much to be desired — a 1st rounder is far too expensive for a guy who doesn't fit in their top 4 (given he's a left-shot defenseman, and would be brought in for the 2nd pairing), and would end up on their 3rd pairing. The roster finagling that would be needed to see him on the left side — with whom: Holl? — just doesn't make sense. Can you see him on the top pairing with Reilly? I don't. His ability to play hard in front of his own net is great, but we need a guy who can do all of that stuff (be nasty, physical, and intimidate forwards in the D-zone), AND effectively work the transition game.
I'm more interested in the Leafs acquiring a Josh Manson, though that would require slightly more complicated surgery on the roster, and might not even be a trade that Anaheim would put on the table. But more complicated, major surgery is needed, I think — trading picks, prospects, moving players off the roster (Holl? Dermott? Both? Maybe even moving a player now coming into his own, like Engvall, an RFA who the Leafs will be hard-pressed to sign this summer, given Campbell's impending deal) as part of a trade for Giroux and Ristolainen, for example. Complicated, a bit of a gamble, but I'm more willing to do that than to bring in Chiarot for a 1st.
And add another, more affordable big right-hander for the bottom pairing, or as insurance. I like the comments that want to bring Schenn back for this kick at the can.
I honestly don't want to see us trading a 1st round for a rental. If we're parting with that pick, I'd much rather see it go, along with Liljegren and Robertson to Arizona for Chyckrun. At least then you're getting someone with term and control. Heck the way things are going, Muzzin could be on Robidas island before Chyckruns contract comes up..
I’d rather stick with what we have versus trading
If we are giving up another first they have to have at least one year left in there contract after this season and be better then chiarot
Would love to have Ben Chiarot. Will never fill up a stat sheet, but having watched him play (especially during Habs cup run), it's easy to see the value he brings to a team. Keeps it simple, is big, strong, and mean.
Jacob Chycrun please…. make er happen.
Manson please!!!
Manson, deslauriers for leafs 1st rounder, dermott, Richie, and a prospect.
Holl is far from perfect, but underrated.
Never wanted him
Yeah trading with the Habs feels wrong. I had to shower after the Plekanic deal.
I would prefer to give up a first round pick for a similar player like Ryan graves. At least he has another year on his contract to go. Personally I wouldn't give up a first for Ben there cheaper options out there
Was he the one who started the mayhem when did the knee on knee with JT and a no call?
Maybe Chiarot would bring that physical presence. We don't need him to put up points.
no please not toronto anybody else but tor remember josh georges he would not accept a move to tor went to buffalo classy move josh please ben do the same !!!!!!!!!
I didn't like the idea of Chiarot before this video, gut feeling or maybe my hated for the Habs….now i know we definately do not want him on the team….my choices would be one of Severson (yes even after those 2 bad showings against the Leafs) maybe Manson and would also try to add Luke Schenn if he becomes available depending how Canucks end up.
I'd rather Scott Mayfield. Cheapest option between Manson and Chariot and plays a similar game.
The blockbuster should be with Vancouver. Luke Schenn and JT Miller for a king's ransom.
Mayfield, Miller and Schenn should add enough physicality to allow the Leafs a better chance playing playoff hockey.
Don't need chariot need shot blocking hitting #4/5 dman to up grade bottom defense
We don’t want him
Doughty
Stay away from rental players. It never works out well for the Leafs. Rather use what we got like Carl Dahlström for example or go after a D man that is under the radar and build up his confidence like last year's experiment with Alex Galchenyuk
I posted this on your buddy Piluk's video but yeah…
No thanks. I know he's on a bad team, but it's a sideways move at best. I wouldn't waste any assets on him whether he's on an expiring contract or not. Guy is Jake Gardiner on steroids in regards to turning the puck over. The last thing Soup needs is to worry about Chiarot throwing a meatball up the middle for a grade A chance. If you wanna go balls out, Chychrun, if you want to make an improvement on what they already have, Klingberg. If you want to lose credibility as a franchise more than you already have, Chiarot.
Numbers be damned. We need a tough to play against dman. 2nd rounder. Not a 1st.😉
not worth a draft pick… other
We all know because this video was made. That Chiarot will go to the eventual cup winner *not us.
We need a better D Core, but I have no idea as to how.
I agree with some on here about rental players, but our rental players of late have had no reason to stay due to our poor play-off performance. Maybe with Chiarot we can see a guy have a rejuvenated career with a solid play-offs, and we need the help…but I don't buy it.
Holl has improved, and so have the Leafs but we need backchecking, fewer mistakes, and need to keep outscoring opponents which doesn't happen after the regular season. I would rather grab two guys with above average numbers who can hit, and play simple defence…we do not need top defenders, just better than what we have.
Justin Holl sucks. Trade him please hes slow doesn’t have any shot or offense. When leafs fall in playoffs then just fire Dubas please please please !!!!
No we would not….and definitely not for a 1st….Id rather take Mayfield and Miller any day
No
We need Chiarot.
Hard no on Chiarot
Just like wanted Barrie, dream on for another dud
hmmmmm maybe?
2022 & 2023 first round picks is the price !!!
That's right !!!
The Carey Price affect is real
The answer is not Chariot, the Habs have been awful because they need a PMD. Chariot is not that. Liljegren has been much better when paired Muzzin because he provides that PMD skills that the pairing need. Move Holl down to the third pairing and boom you have a more balanced lineup. On the PK let them play if it’s working.
Leafs actually need 2 good D men. They need a solid top 4 and one extra in case of injury.
"Justin Holl….There's nobody been better" Thats because they all suck defensively. Doesnt mean we should keep him. That being said, i would rather have justin holl play instead of Muzzin. Muzzin is the most expensive puck bag.
