Game one of the first round didn’t go exactly as planned for the New Jersey Devils. The New York Rangers scored five goals and Chris Kreider was able to net two power-play goals. The Devils were 0/4 on their power play opportunities and weren’t able to generate one single shot on goal while on the man advantage. Adam Fox also collected four assists. Jersey Joe (@headsuphockeypodcast2707) decided to chime in on the postgame recap as we discussed potential changes that the Devils need to make before Thursday’s matchup.

Series is over. Devils will be lucky to win one game.
Igor is locked in has been for a while. They figured out how to slow us down big time by every player just laying down in front of Igor. Theu can dominate puck possession all they want but no shots are gonna get through
Remember when you said the Rangers are an easier opponent than the Panthers and that the devils would win as long as they didn’t play down to the competition? That didn’t age well.
There was definitely an element of nerves at play there. You could tell they were gripping their sticks too tight in the first.
On the PP they try the same exact entry every single time. D pulls up a bit and drops it to Jack or Bratt and they try to get through 4 guys on their own. Then we let the Rangers pull off the same cycle and pass/deflection from Kreider on the doorstep not moving or being covered well enough, if at all.
I’ll be worried if it’s the same story game 2. Their stellar regular season record has earned them a shitty first game in my book. They’ve generally been good at shaking off a bad one.

Trey this Jersey Joe is a joke. Devils just need to make slight adjustments to a different style of game. No need to change team identity.
I disagree with Trey on starting Luke Hughes. Luke isn't the only player right now coming from college playing in the playoffs. Minnesota has defenseman, Brock Faber playing and he too just came from college. Makar was brought right from college into the playoffs. Luke can handle it.
1. Work on PP
2. Move Palat down and Meier up.
3. Replace Wood with Lazar
4. Replace Bastian with Shar
5. Need to get more creative with the offensive plays to get through Shesterkin
6. Vitek needs to wake-up (he gave up at least 2 soft goals)and go into beast mode or every other adjustment is useless.

Rangers can play lot better offensively if needed, here they were focused on team D and showed what experience means in the playoffs
Nothing takes away the importance of experience and this series seems eerily similar to the Ranger/Hurricane series in 2020 with the roles reversed. The playoffs are just a different forum, Jersey Joe's comment of thinking that the Rangers can be intimidated should look back to the last Rangers/Lightening game. While I respect the Devils' talent too much to think of a sweep, their stars need to raise their level of play to compete with the Rangers. As for the Rangers team becoming cocky, it's important to learn and understand your adversary before aspiring to conquer them. Finally, Igor Shesterkin is just getting started, the ceiling of his performance is the best Goale in the world. Therefore to achieve success the level of talent must be equaled or superseded to vanquish your opponent.

This was a disaster akin to the Jets game, just a straight-up ass-whupping. I hope the boys can turn this around and do it quickly, it would be mortifying to get taken out in the first round by the Rags.

Devils are faster, better scoring, and younger, but the Rangers are bigger, tougher, and more experienced.
The former matters more in the regular season, while the latter helps more in the playoffs.

Question, is the definition of playing down to the competition going 0/4 on the power play with zero shots and getting bodied at the blue line forcing them to have to dump and chase?
The devils don’t have any advantages matchup wise. If you throw Luke Hughes in there and burn a year of elc… that’d just be embarassing as they’re going to be swept if they can’t figure out how to win game 2.
