Remember, this was still the “1940” era. The Rangers had acquired Messier, they’d won the President’s Trophy, this was it. 1992 was going to be the year they broke the curse.
Game 4, Rangers had a 2-1 series lead. They had a 4-2 lead in the third period, when the Pens took a 5-minute major. Rangers were all set up to take a stranglehold 3-1 series lead.
Instead, Pens killed off the major, and with the crowd going crazy from the PK, [Ron Francis scored on a freak slapshot from center ice](https://youtu.be/RkBetCrJTZw?t=140) to cut the lead to 4-3. Pens tied the game a few minutes later, then Francis completed his hat trick early in OT to tie the series 2-2.
Pens won game 5, 3-2, on a Jagr goal with a few minutes left. The rest felt like a formality. Game 6 was a blowout. Penguins would sweep the ECF and SCF and ultimately win 11 straight games to hoist the Cup.
This was a brutal loss for the Rangers franchise. 1992 was going to be the year and it came crashing down in a span of minutes. To make matters worse, Rangers didn’t even make the playoffs in 1993. They fired Roger Neilson halfway through the season, brought in Ron Smith and finished dead last in the Patrick division.
Given what happened in 1994, we all feel a little better about it. But that Ron Francis goal will always haunt me.

Then I watched the first 2 games of the series and cried. Then I watched them win the series and I cried some more. Then they won the Stanley Cup, and I cursed them with the fury of a thousand suns.
