Luke Hughes Scored His First Career Goal in OT…Devils Broke Their Franchise Record With 52 Wins

On the final day of the regular season, the New Jersey Devils were able to break their franchise record by winning 52 games. The Devils had to overcome a 4-1 deficit, but they were able to defeat the Washington Capitals in overtime. Luke Hughes was able to pick up his first career NHL goal by scoring in overtime in exciting fashion. Mackenzie Blackwood once again didn’t impress in net, so Akira Schmid had to bail him out. Blackwood might’ve played his final game as a Devil.

  1. Agree 100% Akira Schmid is a much better goalie than Blackwood. Schmid has to be the backup. Luke Hughes also needs to get playing time in round one. He could totally fill in for Brendan Smith, who could cheer motivational slogans to the bench while handing out Gato!!!

  2. Standard tickemaster ticket price set by the Devils for upper deck is $300 – $400. What an insult to their fans.

  3. Mac didn't play great but at the same time I feel like the devil's always play like shit in front of him

  4. I love the fact that Nico Hischier hit 80 points this season. He's always been a defensive stalwart but to see him get so many points has been a revelation. Maybe he wasn't such a bad No. 1 overall pick, huh?

Quinn Hughes might be the best skater in the Hughes family but Luke Hughes isn't far behind. He could be a real contributor and a genuine threat as soon as in this year's playoffs.

What a treat that we have not one but two of the Hugheses, hopefully for at least a decade. It's a shame that Jack couldn't get 100 points but I think he's gonna have many more cracks at the century mark in his career.

I don't know if Akira Schmid is the long-term answer in net but he's the answer, at the very least as a backup, right now. He absolutely stoned the Caps in OT. The ship has sailed for one Mackenzie Blackwood.

What a single-season turnaround, 49 points! Not to mention single-season team win and point records. Congratulations to our Devils, hopefully this is just the beginning!

  5. As a longtime Mac defender, it has to be over now. The majority of fans don't like him, the team plays different in front of him, and it just hasn't fit for a long time. I wish him luck wherever he goes.

  6. I don’t see it as a tough decision….. don’t even have to look at the other comments on this video. Akira is the way to go and I’m surprised it hasn’t been this way since his numbers have been so good and Blackwood’s have left so much to be desired….. Now let’s go and sweep the Rangers under the rug and have a nice rest for some real competition……

  7. Update: Curtis Lazar was assessed a fighting and a broken stick penalty. Bill and Dano’s speculation on the official assessment was incorrect

  8. Lindy loses the locker room if he goes with Blackwood over Schmid. Even Helen Keller can see that the Devils play better in front of Schmid.

  9. Blackwood's good "moments" are just moments. Inconsistency is another word for mediocrity.
