I agree with all of you. Good points all around. But ultimately, I lean toward agreeing with Blais. The NHL has said that the LTIR Loophole is acceptable. So use it. For the last couple of offseasons, the LTIR loophole has been a topic of discussion if a rule change is needed to close it. But they so far have always decided that the LTIR system is acceptable.
Blais is right. Once Landeskog misses first skate date then you need to make a plan for different scenarios. Like this is not something you need to have hindsight to see.
Make a big move:
Best case scenario: Have a top rental and Landy only plays in playoffs. WIN/WIN
Worst case scenario: Landy misses playoffs you still have a top rental to help your push. LOSE/WIN
Make no moves:
Best case scenario: Landy plays regular season games to prepare for playoffs. WIN
Worst case scenario: Landy misses playoffs and you made no move for top 6 player to fill a need. LOSE/LOSE
These are scenarios you could've thought through a month before deadline when landy missed first skate date. Avs are on the worst scenario path possible.
