Would it be a bust if Bruins don’t win the Cup?

The Bruins have set an NHL record with 63 wins so far this season, easily capturing the Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s best team. So, if Boston doesn’t win the Stanley Cup, would their season be considered a bust? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button shares his thoughts.

  1. You just can’t call it historic! when the Canadians had 60 wins. No team even came close to beating that for years, until the league went to a not loser format, that in itself is the only reason the record was broken.

  2. That Habs team also was filled with HoFers. (everyone says no OT and no shootout, ok, they didn't have a salary cap and not full free agency, was limited back then) Hard to compare eras.

  3. I'm a Canes fan. Seeing the consistent quality of the Bruins this season… I think they will do it. If not, then at least a deep run. It's not like the Panthers last year where it was so inconsistent with the comebacks.

  4. You guys realize how luck based hockey actually is? It's not like we have a 60% chance of winning it all. There's like a 20% chace at best for us to actually do it, so I wouldn't call that a bust if we don't manage to win.

  5. So I have an unpopular opinion, but no I don't think it'd be a bust. With one more point the Bruins would be the 7th team to finish with a points percentage over .800. Even if they don't they'll be sitting with the '96 Red Wings at .799.

The Stanley Cup is awarded every year, but a season over .800 happens once every 15 years on average. Losing in the playoffs doesn't take away what they accomplished.

  6. By doing what they’re doing ,they put a label on them saying “win the cup or its all for nothing”. Now what they’re doing is awesome, but the cup is the ONLY prize!!!! You don’t get a ring for points or wins. This guy is a leafs fan so ,of course, he brought this up.

  7. Haters will see it as a bust.
Real fans will see it as an emotional season to never forget….(the wins, Pasta's 60, goalie goal, goalie hugs, records broken etc) Best team I've seen in 35 years. If they win the cup it'll be the cherry on top but even as a die hard Bruins fan, I know the Stanley cup is extremely hard to win and the players know it, don't expect them to sit back and earn it without any effort just because of the amazing season they had. Let the games begin!!!! I hope for an Oilers vs Bruins finals.

  8. Of course not. Nhl is so even and hard. If they dont make it to the conference final its a bust. If they dont make it to the final its a dissapointment. If the they dont win the final its still okey.

  9. They are the best regular season team in history, anything but a stanley cup is a disappointment

  10. Boston's goalies are FAR from proven in playoffs… Bruins choke 1st round, like last year IMO

  11. Of course it would be a bust if they don't finish. Imagine having the most wins in a regular season and not winning it all.

  12. Kind of ironic the teams the hold the record for most wins in a season in the other 3 major sports all never won the title. Warriors had 73 wins, Patriots 16 and the Cubs 116 and all lost in the finals.

  13. After watching this team all season, the only thing that could prevent them from winning the cup is injuries and bad officiating. If Ullmark continues his spectacular play there isn't much other teams can do to overcome Boston's depth.

If they manage to lose a 7 game series, something terrible must have happened.

  14. 100% cup or bust. Ask the Lightning if they prefer the cups or the record-breaking first round exit (it was a sweep, too, right?)
