Gerry Cooney – Devastating Puncher (Highlight Reel)

Highlights of the former top Heavyweight contender and devastating puncher.

Gerry Cooney – Is a retired American professional heavyweight boxer from Huntington, New York. Despite relative inexperience, his exciting wins and size, aided by expert promotion, propelled Cooney into a lucrative bout with world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes in 1982. Cooney performed credibly before his corner retired him in round 13, and was regarded as having made a brave and determined effort. A view of him as tactically naive in defense was reinforced when former light-heavyweight Michael Spinks defeated Cooney in five rounds. In his final bout, he demonstrated his exceptionally hard punch by staggering powerful George Foreman, but was unable to capitalize on it; again showing himself deficient at basic self-protection, Cooney suffered a devastating second round knockout that ended his career.

  1. My grandmother's last name was Cooney. My dad's first cousin. My brother and I always hit harder than the kids out age. Threw the baseball and football faster and farther. Good genes here. My brother thew a golf ball over a hundred and seventy yards. Haha. Got a free lunch off of a preacher.

  2. It's been said before, but George Foreman testified to the power of Cooney by mentioning his name among the 3 top punchers he ever had to meet throughout his career.

  3. George Foreman said he was in the top three hitters he faced so I gotta believe it when they say he was a hard hitter

  4. I've seen that clip of him pummeling Norton in the head for years and years, it still amazes me Norton didn't die, and it still amazes me the ref didn't get in there sooner

  5. That Ken Norton fight is grisly. That ref just stood there with the man out in a seated position taking bombs. The ref should have been banned for life.
