Translation: it turns out 10% of our players are making our rainbow capitalism efforts difficult and since most of our franchise executives are white boomers, we no longer have buy in for our performative efforts.

  2. Ok_Affect5106

/r/hockey ain’t gonna like this one.

  3. poopfart68

Gonna cancel military appreciation nights too? Gotta say rooting for someone who’s “service” was killing brown people for oil doesn’t make me very excited.

  4. Mahonneyy123

Did everyone enjoy the hockey last night ? Pens really don’t want that last spot! And preds and flames are still alive?? Whaaaat!?

  5. Fleganhimer

“If Pride Night just provides a platform for players and fans to dump more bad faith arguments and toxic opinions out there, why bother?”

Maybe because a vast majority of players are opting to show support for the community and the tiny minority of players coming out against it are just outing themselves as homophobes?

Every embrace of minority groups has been met with toxicity and bad faith arguments. Ideally, all of them eventually reach a point where the people doing that are seen as the bigots they are as accepting those minority groups becomes the normal, acceptable way to behave.

Cancel all of the theme nights and warmup jerseys. Cancel the stupid military circlejerks and anthems while you’re at it. Just play the game.

  7. JOJO_IN_FLAMES

I’m fine with this as long as you cancel all the other performative stuff. No military nights, no breast cancer awareness nights, no indigenous nights, and no anthems.

As a queer person reading through these comments, it’s almost pathetic to see how you people feel about those different than you. My sexual identify isn’t fucking fun. It’s not a cute little quirk. It’s something that could get me killed. It’s something that prohibits me from donating blood. It’s something that prohibits me from adopting in some states. It’s something that is straight up being banned from being taught about in schools. So how fucking dare you deduce this to semantics. Pride nights are obvious cash grabs, of course, but it’s a whole lot better than nothing. If seeing rainbows during your hockey game makes you that fucking upset, or if you’re more worried about the image of the game rather than the fact that there are players who hate me for who I choose to love, then you have serious issues you need to work through. I love hockey, and I love most of the people involved with the sport, but there are a lot of you who make it so difficult to enjoy.

  9. How about no forced participation. Don’t want to wear the special jersey that night? Who cares. The ones saying the players have to do something are the problem. You do you and leave others to do their thing.

  10. Bayoffun

They should cancel all the special nights. Military night is ridiculous. Pride night is ridiculous. All of it. Just play the game. Nobody cares. Scratch the anthem too. It’s just a game, go play it. Everybody expects everything and on the other hand everybody is offended by everything. It’s exhausting.

  11. Volumes09

Let’s look at getting rid of military nights also.

  12. GonzoTheGreat93

Military service goes against my religion. I don’t mind if people choose to serve in the military in the privacy of their own home but this kind of thing is a distraction at the rink.

    Just let them play hockey.

    /S

  13. OkEstablishme

If a player chooses not to wear the rainbow that sucks but no reason to cancel the whole night. Let said players stand up, answer whatever questions are asked and if we as fans hold them in condemnation that’s the cost of their decision. Not really much else can be done short of boycotting the team which we be unfair to those who do participate.

  14. They better ban military night and drop the stupid anthem then

  15. stalinmalone68

Giving in to the ChristoFascists. Craven cowardice. Pathetic.

  16. burntfuck

Good thing there aren’t a lot of Afghans playing hockey or the NHL would force all women in attendance to wear burkas, you know, to protect the Afghan players and their families from the Taliban…

  17. Jonesyrules15

Wouldn’t it just be easier to do it and celebrate those who partake and leave those who don’t alone?

If 17/20 players wear the jersey willingly isn’t that at the end of the day a major win? How many would have 10 or 20 years ago?

  18. elcabeza79

Cancel all of the pomp and pageantry except for honouring past players.

If Russians are concerned about the well being of their families back in the motherland because they wore a jersey for rainbows in warmup…. how do they get away with wearing camo jerseys in support of the American military which is currently in the midst of a proxy war with their motherland?

Or why not just keep the corporate virtue signaling, but leave the players out of it?

  19. FatherFenix

NHL: “We want to break the stereotype that hockey is exclusive and full of homophobes by showing our support for LGBTQ+ people and making a stand that Hockey is for Everyone! The NHL is steadfast and unafraid to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community!”

*Some Russians and Christians don’t wear jerseys*

NHL: “Alright, so here’s the thing…”

  20. MadisonMan2023

This bums me out. I am playing in my first tournament ever in a few weeks. Madison Gay Hockey Association. Got my pride tape ready and everything.

The embrace of hockey is for everyone is important. Helped me realize overweight 40 year olds who never played before are also everyone.

Learning how to play has been one of the best things in my life. I am happy to be able to show my support for folks different than me and play with lots of different kinds of people.

  21. One-Plane7101

It seems like it would be hard to justify cancelling inclusive celebrations. I don’t really care either way but seems weird to only do it for a short period of time

  22. Vince-15

Or, ya know, ditch the warmup jerseys and leave the players out of it. Let the league show their support through virtue signal all they want. Keep the support because I genuinely believe it’s productive for those in the LGBT community but remove the ability for players to silent protest by ditching anything involving players. If players want to show support do it on socials instead.

  23. stoirtap56

I don’t think they should cancel it.

I think pride night should be a night players can show pride/support for whichever cause they choose.
    That would be truly inclusive.

  24. pastellioness

but deifying murderers night, as paid for by the DoD, still on.

  25. OlTommyBombadil

If you cancel this, cancel everything else too. Otherwise… the PR nightmare would be pretty crazy. I’m actually surprised they’re considering taking a league-wide stand. Seems unnecessary and like a really, really bad move for a league that wants to grow.

I don’t know why people have a problem with these pride nights. Just don’t go. Nobody is making you. Nobody is making you support the team. You are free to fuck right off.

  26. MTBadtoss

We will have our own pride night with blackjack and hooking ✊🏽🏒🏳️‍🌈
