Well, for me this didn’t really answer anything. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/patrik-berglund-feels-at-peace-a-month-after-quitting-sabres-1.4984416

  1. Not to be that guy but…It's remarkably easy to walk away from a couple million when you already are a multi-millionaire. Same said from walking away in general.

  2. Patrik Berglund clearly loves playing in st Louis so if I’m the GM of that team I bring him back even though he has literally no trade value and let him Finnish out his career with the team he clearly loves playing for

  3. I think the article originated in VLT (Västmanland county newspaper). Saying he "betrayed" his team is indeed a poor translation. I'd translate svika to "really letting them down" or so.

It's less about him leaving the money on the table because he was losing passion for the game or not enjoying himself and more about him feeling like the money means nothing when you're unable to feel good on the inside. It sounds like he was entering depression or something. "Given how poorly I was feeling at the time /…/ I really feel like I made the right decision."

I think he still would've been in the NHL if St Louis hadn't traded him. That said, mental health issues are often caused by one thing that can lie dormant for years until it gets triggered by some other event happening. So it may be more fair to say the trade determined the timing for his mental health issues, rather than it causing the issues themselves.

It was a really respectful interview; he was clear about feeling confident with his decision, he didn't put any blame of the situation on Buffalo. He doesn't even blame St Louis. He states that he didn't want to move but tried to remain professional, and that his inability to adjust to the situation made him feel bad on the inside, which made him eventually leave Buffalo because he saw no other way out.

  4. There are honestly too many things we don't know. All this tells us is his passion for the game was dwindling to the point he had to step away. Good for him for not letting greed supersede his mental health. And sometimes walking away really opens your eyes to how much you enjoyed the sport. Maybe plays in Sweden. Either way, best of luck to him. Takes a big man to walk away from money like that.

  5. I could see him getting a one year offer for league minimum – barring he wants to come back and someone takes a chance. Probably done in the NHL.

  6. Sorry to say it, but he seemed to have lost the passion for hockey, while he was still on the Blues.

I wish him the best. Very serious stuff when you are willing to walk away from a big contract.

  7. I read that as, he lost his passion when he was traded. It wasn't Buffalo specifically. Just being traded at all.

  8. These kind of things hurt my inside. Buffalo is a phenomenal Hockey city and lately we've had too many instances like this that give the city a black eye. I will go to my grave feeling Buffalo is the greatest US NHL city when it comes to passion for their team. Even if you don't feel the same as me, you have to admit it's a great fan base and one of the top ones in the league. I'm not going to touch the potential mental health issue, but if Patrik didn't want to play in Buffalo fine, we didn't want you anyways, sorry but not sorry.

  9. I wouldn’t be upset if the blues offered him a deal with the league minimum pay so there is low risk because he was happy playing here.

  10. As an avid follower of the SHL I hope he just finishes in Sweden (preferably with Vaxjo).

  11. And to think there were many people ridiculing him and trashing him for this when in reality he’s struggling with something much more serious than hockey

  12. Lehner and Berglund coming from a suicide country like Sweden still found Buffalo depressing. All the best to them. Admire guys who could just walk away from the dough.

  13. Sounds homesick to me, rather "home" is St Louis or Sweden. I'm surprised things like this don't happen more often. I know Jagr had a lot of homesickness issues, especially in Pittsburgh and Washington. Both teams, and the Rangers as well brought in Czech players. Penguins brought in Jiri Hrdina partway through his rookie year and later hired Ivan Hlinka. The Caps doubled our offer for Robert Lang(and he actually lived up to the contract, at least for a while) to help him.

  14. Shannon, he has made well over 20 MILLION in his career. I think he will be alright, personal health outweighs any amount of money. Can't enjoy all that cash if you're a miserable son of a bitch!

  15. checks jersey color "Okay, now that I know this is the team I'm on tonight I'm good to go." – Mike Sillinger

  16. Why does everyone in the ROR trade lose there passion for the game, but buffalo fans would never boo him we don’t care about berglund this trade was about Thompson the first and second round picks letting ror get off the cap space before his bonus and opening up cap room for skinner

  17. Shannon you secretly have it in for buffalo? This literally has to do with his mental health and not buffalo? When this happened buffalo was one of the top teams in the standings and he wasn’t contributing anyway we didn’t care abut berglund he spent the whole time on the fourth line lol

  18. You did a good job pronuncing the swedish site. It means Hockey Pulse but "puls" is more pronounced like the word "pull" like "he Pulls bill". Any who… thank for reporting.

  19. He has 4 teams in the Swedish hockey league one hour drive from his home town. He will probably play there next season making a quarter of the money playing half as many games. If he decides to play in central europe he will make more money and have to travel even less in a season. He will be ok financally either way. Many upsides to playing in europe.

  20. The stuff I've read from the article made it seem like it wasn't the Buffalo organization that factored into it, but the trade itself. I have absolute respect for him regardless of the reason. It takes a lot of courage to listen to your mental health and do what it takes to start recovery. Best wishes to him going forward and I hope he finds happiness.

  21. In the swedish article he says that the tipping point was when he got traded. I had started to loose the passion before that.

  22. You have lots of swedish viewers, i dont think you would have a problem finding sombody to help you translate if youre hesitant about google translate.

  23. I know this is kind of old but in a recent interview PB declares his interest to play in the NHL if given the chance but as Shannon poited out, who would sign him?
