With how risk adverse Nill is I doubt he buys out Suter with two years left. I know some people think it’s a no brainer to buy him out but the thought of paying a four year dead cap penalty would suck. In Nills ten years here he’s only bought out Niemi and Val who each had only one year left and that’s a much more manageable dead cap situation.

This reminds me of how we felt about Zuccarello. I think someone is going to pay up quite a bit to get the Domi name and we just won’t be able to afford him. That’s ok with what we have in the pipeline.

I like the roster a lot. I hate the idea of a buyout that bites the cap later.
bigbeezy45
That’s too cheap than what he’d be looking for & I also think he most likely won’t want to stay in Dallas. A lot of people have been saying he’ll go back to Chicago on a longer term deal.

I really don’t think Nill goes to buy out Suter for Domi. It won’t be interesting to see what kind of term Domi would want and maybe that has something to do with the possibilities. But the reality is that the Stars have at least three middle six forwards knocking on the door in the minors. Bourque, Blumel & Stankoven are easily vying for a spot and there is still Stranges, Damiani and a few others as a wild card to make the competition. I think Nill is anticipating at least one of them making their debut in place of Domi & Dadonov.

Maverick Bourque needs a legitimate shot at being a fixture, and is a much cheaper option. I like Domi and Daddy, don’t get me wrong. But I was certain we would only get rentals, if anything, up front, because anything else would be a roster spot roadblock for some young talent that’s percolated enough to have a shot.

I have been taught to never doubt Nil. But also… the thought of paying Suter longer than we have to also is not a fun thought.
I just think we have so much talent in the pipeline we would get something similar to Domi. Maybe I end up eating my words but it’s a dice roll that I’m willing to take. I also get to reroll 1s so that helps.

Honestly, Suter has been playing fairly well the past couple weeks and although he’s overpaid, it’s not worth the buyout. Nill won’t do that anyway, he’s way too patient to do that. With Suter on the third line I actually don’t hate his play whatsoever, and he’s decent on the power play point actually when it comes to the cycle and holding the zone.
He is overpaid no question it but I don’t think he’s worth buying out unless he falls off a cliff even more, or starts getting more big minute moments in games.
I like Domi but I seriously doubt he stays here for a team friendly deal. I would be more interested in signing Daddy first

sure Studenic will be on our 4th line next year…………………..

Why would we buy out our 3rd/4th best defenseman this year when he’s still playing at a decentlya high level? Especially considering he’s been primarily paired with a rookie. While his play is nothing earth shattering, its not like we’re talking about replacing him with a clear upgrade like EK or Hedman. Replacing him with a league minimum/ELC guy saves a whopping $2-$2.1m next year, and I doubt that person would be as good or be able to be used in such high leverage situations. Dont worry; the coaches will find a way to play Harley if he’s actually NhL-ready next season (and considered better overall than Miller)
Why this sub has it out for the guy, Ill never know. He’s still pretty good and not like he’s overpaid @ $3.6. Like it or not, its almost certain he’s playing in Victory Green next year and its looking increasingly likely he sticks around for year #4, at least right now.

I think most stars fans undershoot how much domi is worth. Imo he’s easily worth 6m.

Reality is that Domi isn’t getting more than a 2 year deal max anywhere because of his history. Suter buyout next year is absolutely the right thing to do and the most viable considering. Sucks to lose that cap for 4 years, but we pretty much have this year and the next (maybe one more) to vie for the cup until we retool for a few years while the young guys grow up.

First off, absolutely let’s buy out Suter. Secondly, Domi has played what, 4 games? Can we just take a moment here and see what shakes out first? Why do we always have to jump into signing a guy that had 3 great games after being traded?

It’s way too early to judge. Imo, Domi and Dadonov are pure rentals. We’re not signing them after this year. We’ve enough young guns to bring up from the AHL

Well that’s not happening
Pretty sure you can have him for less than 4.5
