Today on 32 Thoughts, Friedman once again mentioned that the Hurricanes are interested in Nick Schmaltz and possibly Shayne Gostisbehere.

I’ve been telling folks Schmaltz would be a good pickup that fits the mould of what DW is looking for. Wouldn’t cost as much in terms of assets as some of the big fish, has 37 points in 42 games for a bad Arizona team, has been a solid middle-6 forward throughout his career, and has term (three years after this at 5.85M AAV). This would be a slam dunk, especially if they could get some salary retained.

Plus he’s on my fantasy team

100% into this idea. I love Timo but I doubt we could get him without giving up something big. This would be an excellent alternative. Plus I have a soft spot for Ghost.

Feels like a very Canes plan B.

Pretty much a Bruins/Caps trade that’s would probably cost less.

I would honestly love this trade. I understand why everyone wants us to go for Meier, but we have to think long-term. Aho, Turbo, Skjei, Pesce, Necas, Jarvis and Staal all have contracts expiring within the next 2 years.

Trading for Meier as a rental is an option, but given our history at the deadline when it comes to rentals it’s highly unlikely, especially considering the reportedly astronomical asking price. Trading for Meier and then extending him is also an option, but then we would be effectively replacing one of our stars with him due to our cap/contract situation.

I think a move like this one would effectively bolster our current roster without mortgaging too much valuable cap space, and most importantly we could likely get it done without giving up a roster player. Which, given the fact that Boston just acquired 2 really good depth pieces for a fourth liner and some draft picks, is what we should be looking to do as well.

I like Schmaltz as a backup option to Meier. However, his GP over the past few seasons is a little worrying and his career high is 23 goals. Gostisbehere as a 3rd pair defenseman and on the PP would be great

I’m convinced these players don’t actually exist

As a former Chicagoan, I love this almost as much as Patty Kane rumors.

Nick Schmaltz is just going for Max Domi 2.0 good player but not going to be game changer

I’d absolutely love Schmaltz if he wasn’t so gosh-darn injury prone. Guy is almost a PPG player.

I’d take Crouse too. Or a throw in of Kassian with 50% retained to beat people up in the playoffs.
