How to Skate Like MacKinnon ๐Ÿ’

Drills from Nathan MacKinnon’s highlight reel.

Steve from BK Hockey runs us through several skating-based drills that replicate what we’ve seen Nathan MacKinnon do on the ice during games.

You’ll notice a big focus on crossovers, outside edge work, and punch moves, as MacKinnon utilizes these in his game constantly to provide highlight reel clips.

  1. I dont even think about the Punch moves as punches, just really hard foot plant and cut. Similar to a running backs jump cut in football. That outside edge drill is a really great warmup. As always big ups to Steve (and the camera dude trying to following him)

  2. Very cool, as a very below average (borderline beginner) skater, it's awesome to watch and learn the different forms of the punch move. Great video.

  3. I wish I had seen these videos 15 years ago when I was playing hockey but I suspect I would have had to lose about 40 pounds to have the skating endurance to pull of these moves without running out of gas.

  4. So fluid and he makes it look like this is easy ๐Ÿ˜€ Great drill keep up the good work!

  5. Great video, and great skills to learn, but I donโ€™t see how any of these pertains specifically to Nathan MacKinnon. For example: how is the โ€œNathan MacKinnon inside cut & shotโ€ any different than the way most players would do it in the same circumstances? Iโ€™m not trying to put the channel downโ€”as I said, itโ€™s still a great videoโ€”but naming a series of fairly standard maneuvers after โ€œNathan MacKinnonโ€, kind of cheapens the whole presentation by assuming that kids will watch it because itโ€™s got Nathan MacKinnons name all over it. I would think youโ€™d want to go for more authentic approach by presenting these skills as great things to learn because they ARE great things to learn, and the instructor does a great job of explaining & performing them.

  6. Hello hockey training! I just want to say you have been very helpful and I love your videos and everything you do. I am a rep baseball player trying to become a rep hockey player as well because I am only house league right now. I am a teen and have aspirations as high as making the nhl. Do you have any tips for me on how I can move up to rep? My skating needs some improvement as well as my iq, and shot power. Thanks so much!

  7. Punch tight turns are essentially what McDavid uses to evade defenders in the corners. He can maintain speed because his outside foot keeps the momentum going. Then he gets straight into his crossovers as soon as he gets out of the turn.
