For much of the first three quarters of the Class 3A state championship game, Calvary Christian watched as a majority of Spring Hill Bishop McLaughlinβs shots found the net.
The Hurricanes took the lead from the Eagles in the first quarter and built it β briefly β to 12 points in the third quarter. But Calvary Christian launched a comeback attempt late in the third quarter to cut into the deficit. In the fourth quarter, the Eagles tied the game, took the lead and surrendered it again.
In overtime, Calvary Christian outscored Bishop McLaughlin 9-0 to win the Class 3A state championship 85-76 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland on Friday night. The championship is the second in the programβs history.
βOur guys, theyβve played in big-time games already,β Calvary coach Cilk McSweeney said. βAnd thatβs the reason why we played this type of schedule. They played their hearts out for me. We were able to overcome.β
Led by junior Emanuel Sharp, the Hurricanes excelled at shooting for most of Fridayβs game. Sharp finished with a game-high 33 points. He knocked down four of Bishop McLaughlinβs nine 3-pointers. The Hurricanes finished the game shooting 52 percent from the floor and 43 percent from behind the arc.
βThose kids can play, man,β McSweeney said. βTheyβre just as good as those guards we played at IMG or Montverde, and theyβre all coming back. Unless we move to 4A, we plan on ending up seeing them again.β
Despite Bishop McLaughlinβs strong shooting, Calvary kept pace. The Hurricanes got out to its one double-digit lead early in the third quarter with a 13-7 run to start the third quarter. But the Eagles battled back to cut the deficit to six by the end of the period.
Calvary caught up with Bishop McLaughlin in the fourth quarter. The final period of regulation had six lead changes as the two teams battled into the final seconds. Sophomore Marvel Allen gave the Eagles their first lead since the first quarter with a jumper with 5:57 left in the fourth quarter. Calvary went on an 8-0 run to take a 65-61 lead with 4:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Sharp picked up his team down the stretch, scoring seven points in the final 1:07 of the fourth quarter, tying the game once and giving the Hurricanes the lead twice. But Eagles sophomore Carl Cherenfant tied the game on a free throw with 4.8 seconds left, sending the game to overtime.
All but two of Calvaryβs overtime points came on free throws, as junior Gregg Glenn scored four points, Cherenfant three points and senior Dylan Canoville closed out the Eaglesβ championship season with a spinning dunk in the final seconds.
Allen led Calvary with 21 points. Cherenfant added 18 points, Glenn scored 15 points and Canoville and junior Taylor Hendricks had 13 points each. Four of those five players, with the exception of Canoville, return to the Eagles next year for a chance to defend their state championship.
βThis year, Iβm glad we finished up and won it, but weβve got so much more to give,β McSweeney said. βWeβre going to get back in the gym in like another two weeks, and weβre going to devise a plan to develop them and start getting their weaknesses stronger. And our goal is to be a top-five team in the country next year and have a chance at GEICO (Nationals) and be ready to beat teams like Montverde and IMG.β
