The only thing that is relevant about your statement concerning the 2023 draft is that it is actually a draft. The only significant picks are 1 thru 15. After that it's a crap shoot. Any first round pick they may acquire, if any will be 20-32.
Only playoff teams will trade with them. Even if they traded with a non playoff team it would be lottery protected.
It seems to me that the Habs will be able to rebuild the team with sufficient talent to become a good middle of the pack organization. However they would have to tank longer to get key future players. But again, if they tank too long, some good players will have past their prime before the younger players reach theirs and this will create another problem. Caufield's best years will not be long because he is small and fragile and the minute he looses speed he will stop being elite etc.. The Habs have to move fast and make the best of the two next drafts to complete the rebuild. After that, it will be a question of letting the talent blossom. They need a #1 goalie and t they need a super star forward… If they want to have a chance to win the cup with this generation of players. One thing I know that the Habs have enough of is good defenceman. The best thing that could happen would be that the Habs pick amongst the 3 first teams to hope getting one of the next super stars available in 2023. Sadly the year which the Habs had the first choice was probably one of the weakest in hockey history. Slafkovski will end up being a good player, sort of a mix between Kirby Dach and Josh Anderson. But he does not possess the magic touch that previous first picks had. He will be a solid second trio player with carracter but if he doesn't learn how to avoid injuries he will never turn out to be a major asset. Many things are up in the air and the Habs have had very bad player contracts that are slowing down the rebuild. Hughes will have to pull alot of rabbits from his hat to be able to build a Stanley Cup franchise.
