Basically said a retool looks likely. One to two years. Talks about having a good d core. Says mikkola could be a target but one we’re unlikely to want to move from. Mentions Barbie, ROR, Tarasenko as targets. No news there. Talks about Aciari and Pitlick playing solid and being good value targets for cap strapped teams looking to add some depth.
He’s not really wrong about our D. We’re much better on paper than we’ve been performing. We looked pretty good last season and if we would have made it past Colorado I think we would have had a good chance against Tampa in the SCF.
If it weren’t for the cap situation and contracts expiring I wouldn’t feel such an urgency to make some moves. If we could run it back next year with minimal changes I wouldn’t feel awful about it… But we don’t have the option. This was a do or die year, this was it for this group and if they were performing up to standard you absolutely take the chance on keeping it together in spite of your UFAs walking in the off season. But as the season stands I see no sense in taking that risk based off their performance.
So… I’ll say this. I think I’m being pretty objective when I say that Tarasenko is a bit undervalued. I’m not expecting a huge haul or anything but he’s a proven goal scorer with playoff experience, a cup, he had one of his best seasons last year. Teams are going to be interested and if they aren’t they are stupid. If you need scoring you’d be a God damned fool to overlook Tarasenko. He’s going to be one of the best targets at the deadline for scoring. And he plays a pretty complete game overall.
ROR is going to get interest. It’s not been a great year but he’s a Selke and Conn Smythe winner. Generally great at taking face offs over his career. He’s struggled this season but show me someone on this team that isn’t struggling this season. I think he’s going to slot into a contending team well.
I don’t know that I see us moving on from Barbie… I think the return would have to be surpringly good for us to move on from him. Guess time will tell though.
