Rangers trade board: Plenty of forwards available at the NHL deadline to fill a need

Staple thinks we’ll target a middle 6 forward and maybe a defenseman. Both should be cheaper to acquire, which is good because Staple suggests Drury doesn’t want to give up either 1st round pick. He doesn’t say why he’s getting that impression, but I like it if true… Something tells me we may need one of those picks to dump salary this summer.

Here are the names mentioned in his [Athletic article](https://theathletic.com/4132270/2023/01/31/rangers-trade-deadline-targets-forwards-defensemen), several we’ve already heard, some maybe not:

**Forwards**

– Acciari
– Barbashev
– Bertuzzi
– Bjugstad
– Bonino
– Cousins
– Erne
– Kane
– Meier
– Motte
– Nyquist
– O’Reilly
– Ritchie
– Sundqvist
– Tarasenko

**Defensemen**

– Braun
– Gavrikov
– Holden
– Kulikov
– Mikkola

A few of those are going to absolutely cost a 1st rounder and more (Meier, Gavrikov), so I’m not sure why Staple included them… Anyway, something to discuss while there’s no Rangers hockey. I’m so bored.

Trading a ppg player for peanuts to then go to that same team and pick up their scraps for a massive overpayment (Tarasenko) is definitely a move I would make.

The Matthews injury story is a lie, we’re swapping Laffy for him on deadline day.

Tarasenko and Motte (again) would be pretty cool, but I wonder what we’d have to forfeit for the Show. Not so sure he’d be worth extending if we got him, either.

Mikkola and Leddy seem to be a very solid shutdown pair so I’d be happy with the former but am curious as to whether or not we’d have interest in extending him. At some point Drury and co have to come to their senses and realize that Harpur, despite his physical prowess, is mostly a hindrance.

I’d overpay for Gavrikov if we’re going for it. Bring back Motte

If he doesn’t want to trade either 1st I think that’s huge. We’re a young team but most of our prospects have graduated and we could use some new blood in the pipeline for cheap young talent down the line. We’re not an elite player away we have the high end talent we just need depth

  6. If we’re looking to do some fine tuning leading up to playoffs and keep it conservative, I’d love to bring Motte back. I also would fancy kicking the tires on Bjugstad, who’s been having a nice bounce back season in Arizona. He’s taking roughly 70% of his starts in the d zone and still put up 11 goals and 21 points on the Coyotes. Both would be nice additions that shouldn’t cost too much.

Now if Drury decides to swing for the fences to make a big splash ala Slather, the only big ticket guy I could see brought in is Tarasenko. He’s been linked to the Rangers for so long it’d almost be anticlimactic if it does happen, but boy seeing Panarin and Tarasenko together would be something special. That’s my two cents, anyways.

Did you put nick holden on this list? I’d ban you myself, if I had the power

  8. We arent one move away. We should be avoiding overpaying for players, our goal should be the offload money between now and the offseason so we have money for our kids

Kevin Labanc has been healthy scratched by the Sharks recently, and apparently their FO/coaches don’t like him. He could be a target, but Sharks might have to retain salary on him and demand a higher pick.

Prob out on Meier, maybe even Tarasenko as well if Drury holds his position on 1st rd picks. And no Kane pls. We need someone to play on Mika’s right if we’re not going to play Kravstov there (should try Krav there at least). A Vatrano type player would be ideal. I’m hesitant to trade Kravstov, considering how light our future RW depth is.

Getting Motte back would be great, love him. Bjugstad would also be a nice 4th line center for Gaut and Vesey(?). Honestly the depth names on this list don’t look exciting lol

He and Vally’s last podcast episode was a good one and got Vally’s thoughts on the deadline if anyone is interested in Vally’s opinion

Need a shooter in the Vatrano mold. No more pass first guys…this team has enough of those.

Also need proper cover for Lindgren.

Loved Motte last year, but I don’t think this team is short on 4th liners.

  12. RayTheCalvinist

I think the team should do one of the following at the deadline:

    1. Middle 6 Forward + 6D
    2. 2 Bottom 6 F + 6D

Glad to hear Drury doesn’t want to trade the 1st round picks; we need them to keep stockpiling our prospects.

Sundqvist should have been the forward the Rangers targeted in the Buch trade. It’s a bummer he’s on a board to try and get him now.

I also have zero idea what this team was doing with Motte and find it really dumb.

We claimed we had no money for him despite Motte openly wanting to return. Yet we go and sign someone like Carpenter who is now in the AHL with money we could have used for Motte. And now we’re goin to be in a position of giving up another pick just to rent Motte again when we could have signed him for this year in the first place.

We need a solid LHD behind Miller more than anything else

  15. agent7300

Panarin – Zibanejad – Meier (Kravstov, 2023 1st, 2023 2nd, maybe zac jones if it needs a bit more)

    Lafreniere – Chytil – Kakko

Kreider – Trocheck – Motte (mid round pick)

Vesey – Bjugstad (should be in the price range) – Goodrow

    Lindgren – Fox

    Miller – Trouba

    Braun – Schneider

    Igor

Holden? Good lord Nick Holden is still in the league. Nice of the Sens to give him a job after how well he performed for them in 2017 playoffs

  17. AARP_Rocky

The closer we get to the deadline, the less enamored I am with the options.

Honestly, if we go into this years draft with two first rounders, I won’t complain.

  18. iamdanabnormal

Staple suggests Drury doesn’t want to give up either 1st round pick. He doesn’t say why he’s getting that impression,

Easy. We’re capped out, soon won’t be able to pay everyone and will need cost-controlled assets to develop (when GG is given the heave-ho).

  19. roscomikotrain

Motte and Holden for Mid level picks, give ice to youngsters to develop

  20. phily724

Question for anyone that knows… why does the full cap hit of a deadline acquisition count towards the cap and not the money said play is left owed?
For example in baseball when a player is traded, whatever they are owed for the rest of the season counts towards the luxury tax. Why do we have to pay for a full season when we are only getting the player for less than half?
