Julien Gauthier – Shift by Shift (with commentary)

Watch 2016 draft eligible prospect Julien Gauthier in a shift by shift video demonstrating his style of play. Footage is from 2/13/2015, when Gauthier scored a goal in Val-d’Or’s 5-4 win over Drummondville.

  1. Most wingers are not known for being puck carriers or providers. He creates enough plays for his teammates. His bread and butter is undoubtedly scoring goals, sure. He's come a long way from his first few games in the league. He was so raw when it came to awareness. Even more than Mantha was at the same age. Even if Gauthier is more physical and stronger and less of a perimeter player. Also his puck skills are just fine. He's not a bad stick handler. He's not a wizard but not bad.

Gauthier is like a skilled grinder. He works hard on and off the ice and he needs time to excel at the fine aspects of the game but I like his odds because he's improved a lot mentally in a short period of time.

  2. Have you considered putting a sentence or two into the description about not judging a player based solely on one game instead of mentioning it at the start of each video? I think this would give you more time to talk about more interesting stuff.
Also, I look forward to seeing your video on Alex Nylander. Good video as always.

  3. I've watched him 7-8 times already this year as I follow draft prospects very closely. He'll likely be a top 10 pick because players like him are very very rare. Not every day do you find someone his size(6'4 225 lbs) that skates as well as him, has high hockey IQ, great hands and shot and willing to throw the body. He's a good 2-way player who is on Val d'Or's #1 PP,PK and 5-on-5 lines but still has room to improve in that area. Also very good net front presence as he finds the soft spots well to burry rebounds and is good at screening the goalie as he's very tough to move out of the way. The one thing he needs to improve upon is consistency(all young players do). 2 of the games I've watched he wasn't much of a factor but he was also coming off an injury from a cheap shot. As you've said 1 viewing of a certain player very rarely gives you an accurate impression of a player.(both good and bad)

Future videos I recommend doing on players:Auston Matthews, Jakob Chychrun, Jesse Puljujarvi, Patrik Laine, Matthew Tkachuk, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Michael Mcleod, Alexander Nylander and Dante Fabbro(this guy will be tough as he plays in the BCHL/might play for Canada at WJC though) as they along with Gauthier are my top 10 prospects for the 2016 NHL draft.

  4. wow i am incredibly unimpressed with this kid. im baffled that he has 29 goals in 30 games and i am baffled that he's ranked as high as he's ranked by css. i know it's just one game, but my god, i hope the canucks stay away.

also are you going to do chychrun soon?
