GAME RECAP: Penguins at Capitals (01.26.23) | Rust Records 300th NHL Point

Thursday night the Pittsburgh Penguins took on the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. Early in the 1st period, the Penguins took a penalty. Alex Ovechkin started the scoring with a slap shot from the top of the circles giving the Capitals the lead. The period ended 1-0. A few minutes into the 2nd, Drew O’Connor shot a puck on net that was difficult for the Capitals goalie to handle. Danton Heinen saw the loose puck and finished the play. The game was tied at 1-1. It stayed that way until five minutes into the 3rd, Capitals Marcus Johansson put the puck past Casey DeSmith temporarily giving the lead back to the Capitals. Half way through the 3rd, Bryan Rust on the rush ripped a shot into the back of the net making the score 2-2. That goal marked Rusts 300th NHL point and also forced a fifth overtime in the last six games for the Penguins. Evgeni Malkin took a tripping penalty in the first minute of the overtime period. DeSmith stood tall to help kill off the penalty successfully. With no one scoring, the game went to a shootout. Rickard Rakell scored for the Penguins but the Capitals Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom also scored giving Washington the win.

  1. Knew heading into this the game would be close and the stakes to be high. Rough first period but we pulled together to force overtime. Very surprised by the PK in OT. Was a thrill to the last shot of the shootout. Could've won this one, but a point is better than nothing. DeSmith played very well this night including a breakaway or so and Ovi's siege. Ready to host the Sharks in the igloo.

  2. Former Penguin Conor Sheary played his 500th game vs the Pens. That felt like an old Caps Pens game. Good highlights.

  3. Ovechkin stands in the same spot every time. Literally….put both defensemen on him.
But hey, I'll take the point. Always entertaining when playing the Crapitals
