It’s a discussion that I think is only necessary to have right now; on whether or not as a collective fanbase of the Montreal Canadiens, we would rather prefer the Habs to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins, or lose and get a 1/8 chance at drafting Alexis Lafrenière 1st overall at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Let’s have a nice little chat, shall we?
The 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs will involve eight already-confirmed teams, which are the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, and Philadelphia Flyers in the East, and the Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Vegas Golden Knights, and Dallas Stars in the West. The remaining teams will fight in qualifying play-in series. The matchups will be the Chicago Blackhawks against the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames against the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes against the Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks against the Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins against the Montreal Canadiens, Carolina Hurricanes against the New York Rangers, and the Florida Panthers against the New York Islanders.
The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:
1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.
The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.
The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

I'm a pens fan, I would much rather go to the actual playoffs than the draft lottery odds. Part of it is because there is only a 12.5% chance and partly because we don't need help on our offence. Our defence is our problem, I can't see another offensive offenceman helping us much. The only thing that is nice is we have someone to fall back on once Crosby and Malkin retire.
I can’t see Habs winning the cup so an 9th overall draft pick (87.5% if they loss to Pittsburgh) vs 16th overall pick if Habs beat Pittsburgh and don’t make it to the semifinals.
I want montreal to make it competitive but in the end i prefer to lose and get a good pick in the draft. Even if we dont get first overall i think we are garenteed 9th overall and we can get a really good prospect at 9th. I feel like next season montreal will have a better team to make a puch for the playoffs…
This has been the most conflicted I’ve been as a Habs fan, I just can’t root against them but at the same time… Lafrenière would look like shit in any jersey that isn’t a Canadiens jersey 😂 (love the videos btw lego, keep up the great work 💪🏼)
So now think of this.
Pens, Leafs, Oilers have a shot at Alexis now. If these 3 loose one more game. They have a shot at Alexis??? Come on. This is nuts but fun to watch hockey right now.
this draft was supposed to be held in montreal. the draft lottery was not in bergevins plans when the season started either. he had already collected a large amount of draft picks just for the purpose of either trading up or acquiring players who will help the habs next year. getting the number one pick would be sweet but if we actually beat pitsburgh it is a golden opportunity for the rookies we already have to get playoff experience. with cole and others also on the way up to the main team in the next two years we are already stacked to make a playoff push sooner rather than later. so lets turn some heads and win. it would be ironic if montreal made it into the playoffs with limited resources and teams that built for a run crash and burn. also hoping chicago gets in, i would love to see that matchup in the finals just to mess with all the NHL experts.
win this year for still midle/lower team for many year! Any way only team MTL can win is Penguins! after he lose !! i prefere lose this year for great team next decade!
after this serie maybe good time exchange Price ? because value is up! and can have good choice ? ex: marco rossi ?
I’m a habs fan, and anyone that thinks the canadiens will go anywhere in the playoffs if they beat the pens is sadly mistaken. Best thing for the team is to lose and have a shot at Laf
Im a pens fan and obviously I want the team to do well and compete, and I don’t want to root for them to lose, but honestly at this point they’re really not looking so good and because the stars are all getting older and we have a relatively small prospect pool, at this point I’d rather just lose now and have a shot at 1st ovr instead of just winning against Montreal and getting swept in the first round (cuz at this point that’s how it looks like it would go)
I don't know what I want. My heart says playoffs. But my brain says Draft
I want the Pens to win
As a penguins fan it’s going to be fucking hilarious when the habs beat us and lose any chance at laf and then get shit on in the next round
they have been loosing for so long, it is my team but sure hope that they are not winning against Pittsburgh, get beat up in the series and suck for the next 27 years. Please have a chance to get Lafreniere one who can make this team great again. Make other star player want to play for Montreal again. If they win this serie I am going to adopt either Edmonton or Toronto period.
Imagine the Penguins getting Lafreniere. We would be set & it would make our window even longer under Crosby & Malkin.
What nhl did is a bit stupid. they made it so losing is now the better outcome for the qualification system…
I live in Montreal, born here! CH fan. I just cant believe we could miss the opportunity to win Lafreniere by losing to the Penguins. For me, like you say in this video, they have no chance whatsoever again any other teams in a best 4 of 7. Let's lose, plz Malkin, wake up!
montreal canadians don't deserve 2020 stanley cup, but fans deserve alexis lafreniere
I can’t believe Toronto pitsburgh and Edmonton have a good shot at getting that 1/8
I am going to cheer if Montreal wins but if they lose I won’t be mad
How did Habs get Tyler Benson from Oilers? In your video game footage Benson scores a goal.
No one was hot including kovalchuk by the time the trade deadline came.
And now, Pittsburgh can have Lafrenière :O !
NOPE the peguins trade their first round pick to the wild for zucker. So no they wont have a chance for Alexis LAF
Last Canadian team to win the cup..only right for them to bring cup back to canada..go habs go..be the giant killers
New to nhl and find these vids very educating
