Key Metrics:
NHLeS: Age, league and position adjusted score of production. 20+ is typical 1st round value, but context is important.
INV%: Player points per game divided by team goals per game.
G%: Same as INV%, but goals-only.
IPP: Percentage of goals scored on the ice the player gets a point on.
P1: Any time you see P1, it represents primary points (a goal or primary assist).
ES: Any time you see ES, it represents even strength.
Cat%: The percentage increase or decrease in even strength goals for per 60 minutes of ice time relative to their team. A player on the ice for 4 GF/60 at even strength, on a team that scores 2 without him on the ice has an Off.Cat% of +100%. Likewise, if the player were on the ice for 1 GA/60, and the team allowed 2 without him on the ice, his Def.Cat% would also be +100%.

  1. Honestly the fact that they got anything back for Lias Andersson at this point is a minor miracle.

  2. Lias Andersson was drafted in 2017 not 2018 but all together as a Rangers fan I agree, I hate that the Rangers always go the "safe" route. Lias Andersson was considered safe in 2017 and he was a major bust. Really wish the Rangers would target more upside and draft for need with those late 1sts.

  3. I like what the Rangers did at the draft overall. I don’t think they had as good of a draft as last year and I did question trading up to take Braden Schneider over Hendrix Lapierre or any other center still available since center was such a big need, but I like the William Cuylle pick more now than I did on draft day upon examining his Tom Wilson-esque playing style further and the picks that they made in between him and Hugo Ollas I did like and Brett Berard was my favorite pick of their whole draft aside from Alexis Lafrenière. The Ollas pick sucked but it was the 7th round so whatever. I personally would probably give them a 1C but I’m not gonna complain about a 1D either as I know the Cuylle pick has been getting mixed responses, especially considering that they traded Lias Andersson to pick him.

  4. Honestly, NYR's draft seemed like it was run by two different people. Person A picked Schneider, Cuylle and Rempe while Person B took Garand, Vierling and Berard. Weird draft but overall not bad. Now lets not screw their development like we did with LA

  5. Trading Lias Andersson for a pick was the smart move for the franchise. Arguing that they got less than what they "could have" is not a winning one. Yes in hindsight the team took the wrong player but that is a different argument, so conflating the two is just muddying the waters. It didn't work out so you move him for another asset. FOMO is behind most poor financial decision making and this applies to those critical of trading Lias for Will. It shows a blind spot between asset management and player development. When I want hockey player commentary I go to places like Scouching. When I want asset management I look to Benjamin Graham, George Clason or Kyle Bass.

  6. I’m curious as to how Covid 19 affected this draft. Do you think they put a larger emphasis on players who had a more “individual” control over their development. I.E.; skating, diet, workout and overall awareness and time management. Thank you for the report btw!

  7. Great analysis but as for hour take on Cuyle, you failed to mention any names thst were available for that "big swing" at 60

  8. I was confused by the Schneider pick at first as well but like all fans I looked to the positives and read some scouting reports. One thing is that he has no injury history and is a consistent defender which is something the rangers need more of; they already have enough offensive defenders. Also he will possibly be playing in the wjc for Canada which is already a testament to his skill level. Also it is speculated that they “stole” home from the devils, so stealing a player from a divisional rival is always a plus. I think he will be in the nhl sooner than people think.

  9. I disagree. Braden Schneider is going to be a solid defenseman. He is big, he hits hard, he is that enforcer that you need to intimidate the opposition.
