I wanted to talk about this as a big picture type of thing rather than just as a trade video.

  1. Finnish Media says that Juolevi had a bad covid, so thats why he is not in best shape

  2. Green never gave OJ a fair shake last season. He was scratched multiple times when he could have been playing.

  3. Organizational need should be a tie-breaker when drafting players. Best player available is always the way to go. You can always make a trade to shore up your team needs.

  4. McCann, Virtanen, Gadjovich, Gaudette, Lind and now Juolevi all gone. I thought Benning was sooo amazing at drafting? Or maybe the Nucks can't develop players properly? Pretty sad state of affairs that the Canucks are in, but I should be used to it by now.

  5. A common theme for Benning's drafting record: it's not who he picked, but who he missed/passed on that seems to define the mess that is his career as Canucks GM

  6. ‘let me know your thoughts’
I think Shannon knows a hellofalot more about hockey than Benning and that this case exemplifies why

  7. Juolevi also went through a heavy bout of Covid-19 in spring (as if all the other health troubles haven't been enough). Might be another reason for his recent conditioning shortcomings. All the same, good luck to him in Florida.

  8. It wasn't just the Canucks scouts who blew that pick. Everyone had Juolevi ranked in the top 10. No one saw that bust happening. When they were announcing the pick Benning said "from the London Knights" I raised a fist because they were going to say "Matthew Tkachuk"….but they said Juolevi. Well, they need young D men, and he is highly rated, so, fair enough. Every scout blew that one.

  9. Had we gotten Tkachuk, we likely wouldn't have been able to draft Pety and Hughes…

  10. Always take the best player available. Always.
GM's graves are marked by drafting "team needs" over best player available.
Because the fans never forget who they didn't pick.
And if the pick doesn't work out, the best player available would get the team the best possible trade return.
Seems like common sense, but it's done every year in every sport.

  11. Yes, BPA to tier out the prospects. But no one knows that their number eight is definitely better one spot better than number nine and one spot worse than number seven assuming the same tier. If the guys are close according to your staff, then look at need. Need isn't a bad thing to consider. It's just not more important than BPA.

  12. I wouldn't be surprised if Juolevi finds his game in Fla and Van fans will be upset. I think only positive things can come out of this for the players involved, disregarding who won the trade or not.

  13. The glow is gone on Benning’s draft ability. High first round picks Virtanen and Juolevi busts. Had to be talked into taking Petterson by Euro Scout Thomas Gradin. Hughes may just be a lucky guess. Benning/Green gone by Christmas.

  14. Sounds like you are blaming Juolevi for missing out on Ketsup, lol

  15. Years ago I wanted Joe Sakic, Leafs took Luke Richardson. Decade later I wanted Simon Gagne, Leafs took Antropov. Decade later I wanted Byram, but the Leafs would've had to trade up seriously to get him and the Leafs do THAT once every 25 years. Ah, to be a Leaf fan like me.

  16. And so continues the pipeline of Vancouver players to Florida and vice versa

  17. officially declared a bust? Never disliked Juolevi, but Tkachuk would have been SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better of an option.

  18. You forget who was at the helm in 2016… going forward the Canucks started smashing the draft.

  19. I think people are forgetting how much injuries have played a part in the struggling pro career of juolevi

  20. Better then getting nothing for Juolevi… hope it works out for both as all have potential… and to all those whining about sergechev and tkachuk if they drafted either or Canucks look way different… no huggybear or Petey… all part of the biz no point to play the what if game lol….

  21. Benning sucks at asset management and player development. Trading Juolevi prevents Benning from taking more heat if he lost him on waivers after losing Lind in expansion (a 2nd rnd pick instead he signed/protected Pearson) and lost Gadjovich (another 2nd rounder) for nothing.
Juulsen just clogs the rightside for Abbotsford, while their leftside is rather weak. Lammiko…. I doubt adds anything to the NHL roster, Juolevi could still develop(albeit a longshot), I wouldnt be surprised if he is having issues after getting covid last year- much like Sutter.

  22. According to Wikipedia, Chychrun was the highest ranked Dman in that draft… so, it's not that drafted for position, they just chose poorly
