Montreal Canadiens defensive prospect depth and looking ahead to the Habs 2023 NHL Draft

The Montreal Canadiens defensive prospect depth is a major topic of discussion amongst the fanbase at the moment, so we get together with Sebastian High, Director of North American Scouting for Dobber Prospects to discuss. We also discuss some players that are eligible for the upcoming NHL draft that made names for themselves in the most recent recent IIHF World Junior Hockey Hockey Championship. Finally, we discuss some later first round players in the upcoming draft the Habs might take a look at if they manage to acquire another first rounder or two in this year’s trade deadline.

  1. There are some scouts that believe Lane Hutson won’t even be an NHL Defender some of them say he’s to small and he’s overhyped they also say he’s no where close to the level of Adam Fox or Quinn Hughes And for me I think all of that is a load of bullshit I can’t wait for Hutson to come into the NHL and make a big impact I’m really rooting for him I personally think Adam Fox is definitely the player he will turn out to be or very close to it he’s so skilled and his skating isn’t as bad as people say it is he definitely needs to work on it but he’s going to be a very good player

  2. I swear if Montreal uses there Florida draft pick to draft a Defender I will lose my fucking mind I will be pissed you do not do that in this draft the forwards are significantly better way better you don’t do that there first 2 picks needs to be a Center and a winger it has to be our offence needs help it needs better prospects our D prospects are perfectly fine right now we can trade for a defender if we really need one but we don’t need to draft one with our top picks if Montreal gets a 3rd pick in the first round then okay that’s fine but we shouldn’t be using our pick or Floridas

  3. Harris Barron Guhle Xhekaj Hutson Mailloux Struble Norlinder Engstrom Trudeau. Habs just need 6 of those guys to work out long term. Not a cup winning D though, need a superstar in there.

  4. I hope we get Bedard but if not Carlsson or Fantilli please. We still need a big #1 center, Its been 30 years

  5. I love lane Hutson and I can see his skill every time when he touches the pouch but I don't believe he will make the NHL. I think he will get destroyed. He is just to small. The us team don't really utilize him and until the bronze game. The size will hurt him despite his skill.

  6. I like this guy. He could have said Guhle, and imo that would have been a fair answer. But I checked his site, he was high on Hutson prior to the draft.

It takes balls to pick Hutson given his size. I totally agree in the sense that he's the only guy in our system who has the offensive upside of a #1 dman.

From what I understand on the dobber rating system, he thinks in his best season if he reaches peak potential he can hit 85pts lol.

I feel like Guhle is going to be a 1st pairing guy but more of a #2. So maybe in an ideal world me and Seb are both right and they make up our 1st pairing.

I love Xhekaj and could see him being a #4 in his prime but I definitely think 3rd pairing is more likely. It isn't out of the question for me yet though.
