What's racist about this email? He said the guy had big lips? So what. What is racial about having big lips? I missed the biology lesson that taught only certain kinds of people can have big lips. This is ridiculous. The whole issue is just another demonstration of a witch hunt for a problem that doesn't exist. Someone had to go digging up 10 year old emails to try and make the case that a white man is racist, and even the supposed evidence they provided is completely insufficient.
Saying that a person, any skin color, has big lips or nose or ears or any body part – is NOT racist. If he said look at those big black lips, or those n*** lips, then yeah that's racist. He just said that another man has lips the size of tires. It's only racist if you make it racist. It's only racist if you connect Smith being black to black people all have big lips. That's a stereotype. A black man can have big lips…. A person can say hey, your lips are big. That is not racist. If white women have small butts generally speaking – is it racist to say hey that white girl has a flat ass. No. It's not. If you see a man with a big nose and say wow his nose is the size of a tree. And that man is Jewish. That's not racist unless you say that he has a big nose BECAUSE he is jewish. Otherwise, it's just pointing out a physical characteristic – the person reading is the racist one if they connect those dots and carry on the stereotype. As a not racist reader, I would just say oh this guy must have big lips regardless of his skin color, look at the man's picture, yep those are pretty big. And move on. Who cares.
And finally – If every person in the world had their texts, calls, e-mails, conversations, on record and kept track of for their whole life… would any of us be free of sin? Free of making mistakes? Free of using words that we regret? Nobody is perfect. Everyone of us has said something slightly racist or wrong or rude in our life, whether in anger or joking or whatever. This world is f*cked if are going back decades and nitpicking e-mails of coaches who said another man had tire-sized lips. Seriously, is that what our society has become??? Gruden is not racist.
I have one question really. If John Green was talking about a white guy and said he had big lips, would this even be a story? Where do we draw the line as far as what features you’re allowed to point out on someone just because they are black? Could he say that he had big hands or feet? Is he racist for saying that?
