Claude Giroux did willingly put himself in a bad position there. Knowing that a hit is coming and turning your back to the opponent is foolish on his part.
This is the unintended result of adopting automatic icing. Clubs don't practice touchup drills like they did and it leads to guys not protecting themselves when in puck races to the end boards. Giroux should've protected himself better. He should've stood up to the hit and jumped into the flex of the glass. It wasn't even a hit. He was ridden into the boards. Sure. It looks ugly, but Giroux made it worse.
That's not a board. Riding a guy into the boards into a pin is a super common play and it's almost never called. The only difference here and what makes it look so bad is Giroux loses is footing in close to the boards, which leads to him being thrown into them a little bit.

Jason Robertson hit against Quinn Hughes please #request
That should've been a match penalty and a game misconduct by the way he pushed him to the boards, no?
Sens do this every period of every game and I'm not even a leafs fan.
Weird call tbh, just think it was a strong play battling each other for the puck
