I was just trying to explain to my girlfriend exactly how Ullmark and Spence failed on the first goal. There was no communication. Communication is the old fast one. The tried and true.

"In the modern NHL, communication isn't just encouraged—it is treated as a core technical skill, as vital as skating or puck handling. Coaches view a "quiet" team as a losing team.
The Hierarchy of On-Ice Communication
1. Defensive Zone Coverage (DZC)
This is where communication is most critical. Because offensive schemes are increasingly fluid, defenders must constantly "pass off" players to one another.
The Goaltender as the "Quarterback": Since the goalie has the full view of the zone, they are responsible for calling out "unmarked" players or "time" (letting a defenseman know they aren't being pressured).
Switching: Defensemen must vocally confirm when they are switching assignments to avoid leaving the "slot" (the high-scoring area) open.
2. The Breakout and Transition
Communication here is about speed. The less a player has to look around, the faster the puck moves.
Directional Cues: Players will yell "Over," "Rim," or "Reverse" to tell the puck carrier where to go before they even turn their head.
Support Calls: Teammates will let the carrier know if they have a "man on" (approaching checker) or if they are "even" (no immediate pressure).
3. Bench and "Line Calling"
Coaches emphasize communication during line changes to prevent "too many men" penalties.
"I've got him": As players come off the ice, they must communicate who they were covering or which opponent is currently the primary threat to the player replacing them.
Why Coaches Push It
Eliminating Hesitation: A split second of doubt in the NHL leads to a turnover. Verbal cues eliminate the need for a player to "scan" the entire ice.
Psychological Edge: A loud, communicative team often appears more aggressive and organized, which can rattle an opponent’s confidence during a high-pressure forecheck.
Reducing "Looking" Time: By using ears to gather data, players can keep their eyes on the puck and the net, rather than searching for their teammates' positions.
The "Silent" Penalty
While there is no literal rule against being quiet, many NHL coaches will reduce a player's ice time if they are "invisible" vocally. In film sessions, coaches specifically highlight instances where a goal was scored because two players didn't talk, leading to a blown coverage."

What is with Jack and Timmy. A stand out, are you serious? Timmy might possess the puck a lot, but he spends it twirling aimlessly. You score on PPs by passing quickly, but Timmy is incapable of that. Yet another dipsy doodle at the blue line tonight on the PP, yet another puck out of the zone, this time a breakaway. On that 5-on-3 at one point he just kept twirling back and forth along the boards. Killed off 20 or 30 seconds. He needs to take the KISS principal to heart, except in his case it means Keep It Simple Stutzle. If he could hit the net all that possession might be useful, sadly he can't (although our illustrious captain is worse).

i think i am well known right now for my rather negative comments, but as we look to miss the play offs now, might these comments be true? it is too easy to just blame goal keeping. ive been saying it long time:: this core of tkachuk, sanderson and stützle has never delivered so far, and one 1st round playoff exit in a zillion years is no achievement at all. i say it again: these players will probably never deliver, but: maybe we still make the playoffs and progress,but i doubt it. so this 24/7 praise of our core players makes no sense.,
as for travis green: i kind of like his calm approach, on the other hand he sounds like a human robot that has always taken one sleeping pill too many. today, here and now, i can see no good future, as i can see no progress, and some brilliant performances inbetween a lot of sleepy hockey isnt progress.we are in deep stagnation at best.

Honestly, it looked like they quit on someone last night. I’m worried that they’ve quit on Ullmark, which would tank what’s left of our season.
The out of town scoreboard didn’t save us. We failed to take advantage of everybody else losing and did it in a way where I don’t have much confidence the Sesn can do this.
