Tara Slone visits the Sharks fourth annual Pride Scrimmage featuring Team Trans, the San Francisco Earthquakes, and Team Teal in the latest Making Waves.
And this is what it looks like when an NHL teams puts their money where their mouth is, and actually engages and supports LGBTQ+ initiatives! So proud of my Sharks and to be from the bay.
They have been at the forefront of supporting equality and inclusion in the league for decades. They were the first team to host an LGBTQ+ night in the league (2 years before any official sanctioned NHL Pride night) and they have continued to provide support, financial grants and build real community with the LGBTQ+ organizations and fans in the area.
As someone a part of the LGBTQ+ community and someone who recently got into hockey, this means way more than anyone can imagine, and even I can't imagine what it's like for people that have been in the sport way longer than me or have even grown up with it. As someone that sometimes struggles to find my space in communities and as someone that has not always felt very welcomed everywhere, having just a single spark of light like this, having people like me recognized and celebrated by people I enjoy has genuinely made me cry. Wenny's interview a few weeks ago has made me feel so grateful to have chosen this team and players to watch and support because they're such a great group of guys. Especially after the Olympics it felt like the joy I found watching hockey was completely overshadowed by something else, and having this felt like someone reaching out a hand and offering that same joy but even greater, because they show you that they see you. Thank you to the Sharks, Tyler Toffoli, and Alex Wennberg, and everyone else evolved that made this happen. Seriously, this means so much <33 🦈💙
