Wouldn't it benefit player safety if they were to say, hand out heftier fines (that actually did a dent to their income) to those players? I guess as a team, your gm/coach wouldn't want to lose a player for 5+ game suspension, but if they got that and a BIG fine, it would target the individual and not the team.
That wasnt in the moment… he had seconds of thought processing before hitting him from behind. There's no need for that behavior at this level on hockey. It could've easily ended his career.
A heavy fine and exit out of the league is a suitable punishment. Because there's so many more talented players that would love to fill an NHL spot.
point of contact happened well inside the face off circle. he slide into the boards. double minor at best for causing injury. unfortunate incident, suspension worthy. no. his next time on ice should be meet with a fight. players need to regulate the game once again. hockey is turning soft for corporate tv money. this in not how hockey was meant to be. watch a Ahl game. the players regulate the game like its supposed to be.

The league had a solution it was called the hockey enforcer. A big goon whose sole job was to discourage cheap shots and dirty hits by way of percussive correction via fists when required.

We had less brain trauma in the NHL when players were terrified of the 6'6" 240lbs enforcer that would give them a blackout if they ever went for a dirty hit.
Similar phenomenon to the "increased safety" of football pads/helmets leading to increased incidents of head trauma, because it felt safer to go for those dangerous hits.
One of the reasons why I don’t watch the NHL anymore. They reward the worst behavior. They literally want the NHL to be played nub nameless, talentless mannequins.

removing the ability for Enforcers to properly punish hits like this has made Hockey so much worse. remember when a check like this would immediately result in some angry scrapper throwing off the gloves and pummeling the offender into a good old fashioned concussion? well now you got people flying in for massive hits that go completely unanswered. NHL is becoming a shell of what it used to be.
As soon as Bettman is gone, I hope we’ll get at least 1080p highlights, a proper DoPS, better play off formats…
