Wilson hit on McBain – Clean or predatory? Why not both? Tough Call Review
Tom Wilson levelled Jack McBain with a hit that has the hockey community divided once again. To me it always comes down to one main theme: what hockey purpose did the hit serve?
Charging. Left his feet to make the hit., Which is par for the course for Wilson. How can you see no jumping? He's levitating at the time of the hit. Players do not suddenly levitate because their shoulder is making contact with someone.
It was definitely interference. No doubt about that! But it's also definitely not a charge and he definitely did not leave his feet. Outside of the interference it was a great hit
Why are you even posting this video. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the hit. I'm not even sure if it was late. Officials give a time limit after the puck is gone and it's close to being within that range. It could have gone either way with the interference. Id say no penalty on the play. Why aren't you discussing the play that started it all. The boarding by Tanev on Roy. That was clear as day an illegal hit that should have been 5 and a game. Roy not being injured on the play is irrelevant. There was intent to hit Roy right in the back and into the boards. On that play Tanev came at Roy from a fair distance with Roy's back towards him the entire time. Luckily for Roy he was close enough to the boards. The bad thing on that play was Tanev was only given 2 minutes for the hit and Utah ended up getting a power play. Maybe you should also discuss the fight with Wilson and Crouse as well. Wilson was serving the penalty for this interference penalty. When he got out of the box Crouse was waiting for him and already had his gloves off before Wilson got out of the box. Wilson completely turned this game around without getting on the scoreboard.
Hot take, if the officials had called a boarding major on Tanev when he ran Roy an hour earlier, the game would have had a different trajectory. For Utah to end up on the power play after that hit was insane. Wilson was hot, and McBain was eligible to be hit. In real time, the pass left his stick and Wilson housed him less than .5 seconds later. The officials got it wrong and the players sorted it out.
"Why not both?" Because it's Wilson and there's nothing clean about how he plays the game. If it seems "clean-ish", that's because we're all used to how Wilson plays, and relative to a lot of his other hits, yeah, it's not too bad.
I almost wonder if it could fall under the intent to injure umbrella given how late and how he knew McBain was not prepared for contact at all. Gotta be the most damage done on a 2 minute minor for interference that I can recall seeing

Good take 😊
you know what else isn't there the PUCK

Predatory is dirty, no?
You got this one right. It wasn't dirty. But it was an asshole check. Bottom line. Know where tom wilson is when you're on the ice with him.
I’m not even sure it should have been a penalty, in real time it does not look late. Nasty for sure
Probably just arguing definitions, but, to me, a late hit is a dirty hit.

Im not entirely sure on it being even a late hit but it was definetly a dick move by Wilson as McBain had no clue there was someone coming.

It's pretty clean as far as Tom Wilson hits go. It is still hockey, ladies. He left his feet. It's a charge. That's it.

there should be a blindside hit rule, but for wilson only
It's called finishing the hit
It was clean, and not a penalty
He jumped into the hit. 100% charging.
Beauty of a hit!
Such a good explanation!!
It's less than 1 steamboat 🤣 🤣 🤣
Everyone could make the choice not to hit someone. They should just take contact out of the game at this point.
It’s hockey. Heavy hits should be a part of the game.
Tom Wilson should be taken out back…
Clean hit but too late to be justified. Im a Caps and Wilson fan
