Hayes on Maple Leafs’ draft pick, toughness and future plans
Maple Leafs’ fans are in a strange spot where wins almost feel like losses right now, with the future of their first round pick in flux. Bryan Hayes joins Domino’s That’s Hockey to discuss all things Leafs.
I would have the Leafs win more games this season and give this years pick (which would hopefully be in the teens) to Boston. Next years is unprotected and it would be worse to repeat Seguin/Hamilton to Boston because of – the Leafs are not suppose to be that bad – narrative.
I also want to see the Leafs play more young players to see what they can bring in the NHL level.
Maybe the difference is that they STOOD UP FOR J.T., however NOBODY STOOD UP FOR THEIR ‘leader’. It appears to me that M.L.S.E. has FAILED in roster construction IMMEASURABLY….AGAIN and it continues.
If Hayes was the President and had full automomy, you would have a full turnaround within three to four years. They need draft picks and leadership very badly.
A Captain has to show heart. I'm not sure the rest of the team didn't respond to the Gudas incident because they don't care for Matthews enough. I don't know what the room is like but I'm thinking Matthews isn't a team favorite
They got to win as much as possible now, they can't pull it off to bottom out as really you need to be 3rd worst record to stay in the bottom 5 as 2 teams could win the lottery outside the bottom 5. So best to finish 10th or 11th worst and still have a chance to pick 1 or 2 overall with a lottery win from that position as you can jump 10 places max. If not then Boston gets the 10th or 11th overall pick.
I don’t think MLSE especially under red glasses Pelley has a clue how to run a hockey organization, to busy protecting its woke image than a hockey club
They can’t let treliving make another decision again. He has made some of the worst trades I’ve seen a gm make and that Carlo trade is delaying the inevitable rebuild of the leafs by 3 years

Hayes was a fanboy of the core 4 too. He jumped ship too late also just like Leafs management.

A retool is an insult to the fan base. The Leafs can either control the rebuild or be forced into a rebuild. Either way it's 10+ years
