F1 livestream with Peter Windsor

THIS week the attention turns to Japan – to Suzuka Circuit – to the third round of the FIA F1 World Championship. Some of the road dust has settled since China but the big storylines remain: will Suzuka retain its reputation as one of the greatest of all drivers’ circuits? How will Kimi stack up against George? And how will the Lewis-Charles battle pan out? Add the return (or not of McLaren-Mercedes), the dramas for Honda in their home race and Max Verstappen, fresh from his adrenalin run at the Nürburgring and we have plenty about which to talk. In this livestream, anchored to questions asked by viewers in YouTube Chat – Peter is joined by Mark Slade, the championship-winning F1 race engineer, and Gavin White, the CEO and Co-Founder of About-Energy, one of the world’s leading battery sim and modelling companies. Answers and comments will be prioritised around Channel Members, SuperChats and SuperThanks but we will do our best to accomodate you all.
Special thanks to Gavin White https://www.aboutenergy.io
And to Mark Slade, a former Chief Engineer and Race Engineer at McLaren, Mercedes, Renault and Haas and who has played a major role in two World Championships, 34 GP wins, 101 podiums and 40 pole positions. Mark has also won two Japanese GPs at Suzuka

  1. "George second only to Max when it comes to tire management"?? Tire management is one of Max's only weaknesses. Lawson is one of the best at tire management.

  2. Now that DRS is on both wings, why not reverse DRS? instead of having race trim down force lowered on the straights, slightly increase race trim down force settings in the corners, when a car is within 1 second, to obviate the following problem. You still have extra battery power for overtakes on the straights. Edit Yes I know it will not work with the current engines, which need the drag reduction to conserve battery power. Ditch them, go back to last years engines, or a compromise between the two engine configs. Either that or 3 position DRS. Straight line mode, normal mode and high(corner overtake) mode.

  3. For years we've watched all 20 cars finish races, now we're back to where reliability is also a factor of the overall racing. This battery function or contribution has returned the odds of cars not finishing the race. YEEEAAAAHHHH, Formula 1 is back. 😊

  4. Really haven't a clue how F1 works this year, but would love to see Max just go full throttle from the start line, no consideration of any energy efficiency and then when the battery system breaks down, just park up and leave the race 🙂

  5. Have you listened back to your livestream? We could not hear your guest some of the time. Not sure what was going on.

  6. 44:33 Gavin was the perfect guest as well, as i was wondering for a long time if F1 was using supercapacitors instead, good to have it finally explained.
I had no idea that there was a major difference in output between the two.
Also, pausing on the timestamp, it looks like Mark is doing his best Bill Clinton impression, hah.

1:28:18 That kinda sounds good, maybe they could do 1 quick stop like usual, and 1 longer stop to swap batteries or some other stuff that would be essential to completing the race.

  7. Love the unobjective battery developer and salesmans opinion. Love how theyve fixed the sport, onward and upward….

  8. The talk of algorithms controlling the performance after a car has been in traffic and the battery guy defending the concept was a depressing realisation of what F1 now is, honestly.

  9. I'm under the impression that braking is part of the pushback against footwell cameras, too, no? The binary brake trace is all they want to give up to other teams/public, whereas the footwell would give up more info on pressure?

  10. You will continue to be surprised by young lad Kimi throughout the season I suspect. There is one difference from last year. Kimi has Toto's backing. He will not be asked to let George through because of a slow pit stop.

  11. Peter-Love what you do, but when you take Mark off screen you can hear what his reply is, but the audience cannot hear what Mark is saying until you put him back on screen. Perhaps there is a side-by-side option where you both are on screen at the same time and thus we can hear both of you?
