The Montreal Canadiens have a new top priority — getting Ivan Demidov under contract.

In this episode, Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down why Demidov is the next major piece of business for Kent Hughes and the Habs front office. After a dominant season, how does Demidov’s production stack up against Lane Hutson’s Calder-worthy rookie campaign from last year?

We dive into:

Demidov’s season and trajectory
How his numbers compare to Lane Hutson’s breakout year
What kind of contract Demidov could command
NHL comparables for young elite forwards signing their second deals
Key timelines and important dates for the Canadiens to get a deal done

Will Demidov follow the same path as Hutson, or are we looking at a completely different type of contract and negotiation?

This is a crucial moment in the Canadiens rebuild — and locking up Demidov could shape the future of this team.

  1. Shaun and Marco, if Demidov settles on a $9.5 million per year contract; how much can the Canadiens frontload it with a bonus. First two years $13 million salary + bonus? Then average the rest out?

  2. The Habs culture has created an environment where players are willing to take less I never would have thought that as a 55 year old man

  3. Any player that signs at a discount in Montreal is going to be a fan favorite. Our fans understand the value of players, and if you sign for less, we get it.

Then you get more sponsors because people like you even more.

  4. Considering this may be the last chance for a player to sign an 8 year deal, and that Demigod has little if no bargaining power, Hughes holds all the cards. Demidov will get somewhere around the Captain’s contract. At this age getting a guaranteed 75+ million frontlaoded is hard to beat.

  5. I'd almost guarantee he doesn't get more than 8.5, I don't even think he'll get over 8. He doesn't even deserve 8 yet and shouldn't get that not at all. I have nothing against him he just hasn't done much yet to deserve anywhere near that kind of money

  6. Demidov is gonna sign for 8-9mil over 8 years. He’s bought in, he knows where he is, and he knows he can hoist the cup there

  7. They should do a Kovalev day to give more boost for Demi to sign team friendly deal. The Markov night affected his mindset for sure.

  8. Why would Demidov get that much? He has a decent amount of points but, idk i feel like he still didnt prove that much

  9. Demidov still hasn't shown although he's had a good season plenty of points he hasn't shown a breakout like a celebrini has or some other player like bedard if he had that behind him this year maybe so maybe the 10 million but he hasn't displayed that so I think Habs are going to get him for about 8.5 million

  10. I bet he signs the exact same contract as Hutson. To the dollar. He won’t want to be paid more than his best buddy on the team

  11. 7 million or 8 million over 8 years…?
I would take that discounted salary…. that's how much that I love Montreal…
    But that's just me….

  12. Hutson could have waited a year but imo the Habs manipulated the market to put so much pressure on him if he didn't sign he buckled. Also most players take the guaranteed generational wealth right in front of them instead of gambling another year.
