You guys are spot on about the old boys club, Brad and Berube were obvious lazy hires, they were names who were available so they got hired. The Leafs didn't even really do any kind of search for either position, that just screams laziness to me. They have to do the research and put in the work for the next hires. Need to find the next Bednar/Cooper for coach and find the next Zito/Hughes for GM. They need to actually use their resources and do this properly.

The first time he fucked up and showed he was stupid was when Laughton was hurt to start the season and he messed with the entire lineup instead of just using Kampf and then they lost Kampf.
Leafs should have fired him in October
Berube as a tough guy and scrub played 17 years in the NHL and averaged 7 minutes of ice time per game (for the final few years when the league started tracking this).
So I think he's going to make it just as hard for other scrubs to earn their playing time just like he had to.
The most frustrating part of all this is that there is no vision or process in place it feels like a free for all , from top to bottom of the organization and also not one peep said from Pelley

I can’t get on board with the trade Matthews nonsense. Unless he wants a move you don’t trade him. He’s a better version of Kopitar who is retiring with the Kings. Matthews when healthy is one of the top centers in the game. If Toronto wins the lottery it’s still no guarantee you can find another Auston Matthews. People think trading him is the solution aren’t paying attention. Most top centers last a long time in this leauge. Ever hear of Tavares? How long has he been a good center in the NHL. I could mention other names but I think this should be obvious to anyone even remotely who knows hockey. Finding elite #1 centers is not easy. Remember the Bozak years? Exactly. Matthews is another Sundin type center. You don’t move on from these unless you want to wait about 15-20 years at trying to find the next one. Nylander is a 100 point pace winger. Wingers are more expendable because they are easier to replace. Especially defensively poor wingers. Matthews is an elite defensive center like a Kopitar with better scoring ability. Trading that is pure lunacy, I can’t believe how clueless people are on this issue. There are a handful of great centers in the NHL. Auston isn’t just a point producer he is an elite defensive center. This is a rare combination. He has an injury issue but let’s how the full career plays out. Only in Toronto do stars never retire with the team. That’s quite frankly another reason the team never wins anything. Running stars out of town is what builds a losing culture. And yes media and fans have a role in this. I have been watching Leafs for decades and I am annoyed at the fanbase and the way they treat players. The real issue in Toronto is the absolutely awful drafting record and poor asset management. Draft a defenseman for crying out loud. They basically stopped drafting after the Matthews draft and that’s why they haven’t won anything. Management not the players are the issue. Step 1 is firing Treliving and the top 5 protection fiasco. Should have thought twice with Marner resigning issue alone.
