They thought this trade saved them, it actually made them worse

How did the acquisition of Tristan Jarry worsen the Oilers’ goalkeeping? And how has their defense betrayed him along the way? The Athletic’s Harman Dayal breaks down the key plays and numbers behind why Edmonton cannot be a contender unless their struggles improve.

  1. Stan clearly did this out of spite to the fanbase and some media. Stu was tight with the boys as is Picks. He was trying to prove the team could win with mediocre, confidence rattling, goaltending. It will cost him his job for making a lateral move for Tristan Jarry.

  2. You know maybe the goalie isnt the problem since the Oilers have tried several ones. Maybe just maybe, the core is just bad defensivly.

  3. How long until edmonton realizes that defense sucks because its McDavo that's never backchecking?

  4. The assumption is the Oilers will win the Cup with Skinner and Picard. Never going to happen
With this in mind trading for Jarhead was worth a shot. Maybe it puts a spark in the team. With respect to Skinner if he helps Pittsburgh great for Skinner: this does not imply he would have given this performance with the Oilers. Jarhead or Ingram tend not to give the first minute of the easy goal, meaning the defense at some point needs to show up and help out

  5. Darnell fucking Nurse. One of the biggest dummies I've seen play since Sopel for Vancouver in the mid 2000's. Bouchard scores but also makes moron level plays… I'd rather have a rock on the blue line than a guy who's hot but then so cold it costs you a Stanley cup

  6. We are yet to finish regular season, but we gather here and ready with Tristan Jarry verdicts.

  7. You can put Roy or Hasek back there and if they are facing constant barrage and bad defense, they aren't going to play well. I was starting goalie on a state championship hockey team back in the 90s. We were good, I was decent, good vs my competition anyway. I got asked to play goal for another high school in a club tourney one weekend because their goalie was hurt, I said sure. They were the worst team in the district, I think they won 2 out of 23 games that year. I played 3 games with them and gave up 8, 6, and 9 goals. Lol. I hadn't had more than 4 scored on me in a game in 2 years at that point.

Goalies can only do so much. Hockey is a team sport.

  8. I laughed so hard when I saw the jarry trade. Dubas is a genius getting out of that terrible contract. (That he did give out)

  9. Great analysis and spot on. The Jarry trade always looked high risk.. .trading goalies with similar stats felt like the Oilers were rolling the dice thinking a change in scenery would lift Jarry to a different level,, ironically it was Skinner who saw the performance bump. On the plus side the Connor Murphy trade has helped add a lot more depth to their D line and Oilers are looking a lot better.

  10. Jarry's stick discipline is terrible. The stick should always be along the ice, covering the 5-hole for those shots you didn't react to in time. He's relying too much on his pads–why even use a stick at that point if he's just going to lift it off the ice when the shot comes. How can his goaltending coach not see this and correct it.

  11. Go figure every weak-brained hockey viewer who wants to lay the blame on Oilers goaltenders when watching the play clearly shows how Edmonton are simply terrible in their own zone. Nurse and Bouchard are pathetic. The rest are simply poor, at best. They don't win pucks. They don't battle man to man. They don't get the puck out of their zone and get bogged down again and again until the other team catches them chasing. How many odd man rushes can the opposition get night in and night out before anyone with half a brain consider that it is a team problem, not just a goaltending problem.
Then do the simplest thing and look and see how goalies do once they leave Edmonton. They get better. Much better.
    Simple math, kids.

  12. When you have pylons like Nurse and that cornball clown Walman on the blueline and your “best defenseman” is a secondary assist/McDraisvid Merchant who can’t even play defense *cough Bouchard cough*, you can’t win shit.

  13. Trade a 2 time SC finals goalie for one with no playoff experience and a bigger cap hit, while keeping Bouchard and Nurse. The oilers gm is beyond incompetent.

  14. You need to look at his record before his injury and after. Post injury he fell way off but to your point, the team defense also dropped way off.

  15. Sorry it's your fault taken him, he suck hard last year and going to minnors lol have fun.we love stuuuu. Go pens lmfao

  16. As a Penguins fan I was excited for the Jarry trade. Jarry straight up for Skinner would have been a good trade. I was shocked Dubas got that much for him.

  17. Yeah, but the Oilers are either second or third in their division which means that they still manage to get wins even with their bad goaltending and bad defensive play.

  18. As a Pens fan, I have to say that we absolutely stole Skinner while unloading one of the stupidest over bloated contracts I've ever seen for a mid goalie…few good seasons…sure but that was way too much money…good for him and his agent I guess. Bad for the game overall.
