The Montreal Canadiens fall 3-1 to the Detroit Red Wings in a crucial Atlantic Division matchup.

Despite a strong effort, the Habs couldn’t close it out as Alex DeBrincat took over late, scoring the game-winner and adding an assist to lead Detroit. Juraj Slafkovsky provided the lone goal for Montreal on the power play, while Jakub Dobes made several key saves to keep the Canadiens in it.

Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down everything from this game:

What went wrong for the Canadiens

Another big moment from Slafkovsky

Goaltending performance from Dobes

Missed opportunities and special teams impact

What this loss means in the playoff race

  1. Gotta run out the clock on a few contracts first before making any glory moves. This isn’t our year. It isn’t the time, offseason is best.

  2. not making a major move at the deadline makes this team stagnate. At the very least call up reinbacher and lets have a look already see if he is a better partner for hutson than strubble or carrier

  3. Marty picks and chooses who he pins to the bench! That’s how you lose the lockeroom period! Matheson makes mistake that’s ok Newhook mistake pinned to the bench. Gallagher Carrier penalties becouse they can’t keep up or too small. Look Carrier isn’t a #2 D pairing period. That and the famous man to man is a big problem. It’s time to call up Reinbacher like it or not and no he doesn’t go on the 3rd paring he goes on the second paring as for Bolduc lay off his game isn’t to be F1 going into the zone wasn’t in Stlouis and it shouldn’t be in MTL he should be 3rd man in being fed the puck! Your take on the Habs should’ve won last nights game is false! Detroit outplayed the Habs big time in the 3rd. Struble out Reinbacher in Carrier on the 3rd pairing d with limited ice time Gallagher press box 🗃️ keep Texier and Veleno in and hope to god Anderson plays next game. Habs lose Saturday they’re out of a playoff spot and the ship will sink fast.

  4. Btw Hage won’t sign if there’s a Laval connection it’s Habs or he stays in Michigan he’ll make or get paid even more money in Michigan. Reinbacher just switched to Cortex Habs better watch how they treat their young players cause trouble will come with certain moves.

  5. 100% Marco. Coaching staff must utilize Demidov and stop bringing his ability down to everyone’s standards. Before the 2nd goal Newhook took on the entire D and caused the whole line to below the goal line instead of using Demidov on the zone entry. I worry of Demi’s progression with this group, are you only allowed to be so good?

  6. This game was lost by offense, not defense. They didnt convert on prime chances, and sadly most of the time people will focus on defensive mistakes, but missing an open net like Evans for example, should be considered an offense mistake.

Anyone blaming Matheson, is reacting to the type of mistake that any coach on any team will forgive. Making a bad read is way worst than making a physical error . Matheson lost his balance, thats not a defensive mistake.

  7. Matheson galaxy brains all the time when he struggles. He was like that two years ago. He tries to overdo things without the adequate skills. He's been overhandling and overdoing it a lot with the puck in the last 10 or 15 games, it was a matter of time. That's what is so frustrating about it. You're not that guy pal… keep it simple.

  8. it's not the end of the world if they don't make the playoffs but i would like to see them make it

  9. Matheson's blunder was terrible and very costly. He and Dobson are very error-prone when pressure is coming at them, or appears to be coming at them. As a first defense pair, this is problematic.

  10. No secondary scoring, lack of crashing Gibson sufficiently while Detroit did not have Larkin, and players that are very unnecessarily complicating their game to cause screwups. Keep it simple.

  11. Would like to see Simon Blais come up, big body who plays with an edge. Yes, he's not a point guy, but he brings an Anderson type game into the lineup.

  12. Marco, you easily dismiss Xhekaj, but fail to criticize Matheson EVER. MIKE MATHESON GAVE AWAY THE WINNING GOAL. YET YOU SHELTER HIM. It’s a joke. Wake up!!!

  13. They didn’t miss anything. It’s called hockey positioning. It’s great. They didn’t lost any ground. Still in good shape standing wise.

  14. Not an MSL fan for two reasons 1. The man-on-man defensive system 2. His stubborness – sticking to things that just don't work

  15. Maybe they need to start playing Newhook at center again and put Texier on the wing in his place. Maybe it's time to health scratch Kapanen to see if that wakes him up. Or maybe just move Slaf back down

  16. From last year there is an improvement. Still in the process. We need some contract to end then we will get big dollar player to win it. 27-28 not before that. BE PATIENT.

  17. I don't understand the statement "Blame the league" regarding the Habs not making a trade at the deadline. My understanding is that the trade came in after the deadline. Wouldn't that be on the teams involved to make sure they get the documents in ahead of the deadline? Are you suggesting that it was the league's fault that the trade missed the deadline? Am I missing something?

  18. Matheson's boneheaded mistake is a symptom of the overall lack of situational awareness by the team, plus Matheson simply regularly overplaying his skill set. The obvious play was to simply pick up the puck on the forehand and take it back behind the net, this would have reset the situation requiring the rest of the line to come back. There is a time to make the simple safe play regardless of how skilled the players are. Matheson regularly tries to make the complicated play, we can see this regularly on the PK when we win face offs, it gets back to Matheson and rather than immediately getting the puck down the ice (slap shots are hard to keep the puck in on) he'll skate away trying to stick handle the puck in to a position he feels 'comfortable' with and at least 50% of the time it results in a puck battle or the puck being kept in. With that said, its not just Matheson, the team regularly doesn't use 'situational awareness' to make the proper play. I will say they were much better last night but still made the wrong play far too often.

  19. I will observe that Marco's observation that the Habs 'chose to play this way' is a collective observation, that doesn't come from the players that comes from MSL. MSL is the one that makes up the game plan and if the players aren't playing to his expectations its up to him to correct them. We didn't play nearly as fast or hard as against Boston, that kind of 'flipping the switch' has to be coming from MSL.

  20. Not a playoff team getting exposed in playoff hockey… No surprise here, management decided this year wasn't the year at trade deadline

  21. Game of bounces, not to take away from the lack of offense from the 2nd to 4th line…Detroit scored 2 lucky goals.

  22. Habs as constructed are geared for lousy goosey games, and the opponent willing to play that game. Now that we are in the stretch, teams tightening up….opponents have tidy up their game. Habs aren't built for 1 – 0, 2 – 1 game.

  23. I keep telling it, but Demidov got his points this year, not because MSL helped him, but by sheer talent. He earned those points not by getting any help from teammates or the coach (Slaf a little when he was on briefly on that line). Second line not good in the game, bench the second line (and Demidov) instead of putting him on an other line to give them offense. Very weird strategy when you lose game like you did lose. Instead of trying your 4th best forward (the only other legit top 6 player) on an other line during the game, no you gotta keep him with Kapanen at all times.

  24. Imagine having a potential league superstar like Ivan Demidov, and not giving him everything you can to make sure he has a big season.

  25. Over analyzing Quebecers….. Bad jujuub…. What's new? The trek to Lord Stanley – 40

  26. Danault has been a top 6 center most of his career, I'd like to see him with Demidov and Texier, Evans to the 4th and Kapanen to the 3rd. Danault wins faceoffs, can insulate Demi enough to give him 15-18 minutes and Texier is strong on the puck and can pass. Evans is a 4th liner.

  27. Agree with Marco 100%. I've been screaming Slaf to the 2nd line for a while. Texier on the 1st line… YES. Love you guys. Best Habs content and knowledge. GO HABS GO!!!!

  28. Agree again with Marco. Simplify… just like you first learned the game… simplify.
