Montreal Canadiens fans may have another goalie prospect to get excited about
While most of the attention has been on Jacob Fowler and Jakub Dobes, Alexis Cournoyer is quietly putting together a standout season at Cornell University. The 2025 5th-round pick is turning heads in the NCAA with elite numbers, strong positioning, and a calm presence in net.
Is Cournoyer becoming a legit prospect in the Canadiens’ goalie pipeline? Could he be the next surprise development success story for the Habs?
Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico break down Cournoyer’s season, his playing style, and where he fits among Montreal’s growing list of young goaltenders.

I was hoping this was about our most underrated G prospect and Montreal native Quentin Miller, freshman standout at the U of Denver. This kid is the real deal…
Love to hear that the Habs have a line of options in net. Looking forward to seeing this kid in camp some day
Great prospect and Voloknin as well , having a season setting a record 9 shutouts for 25-10-5 Gaa 1,57 Svs% 0,946 😁
How about Mikus Vecvanags ? Sign him or not ?
Good that there are a few guys with potential to be an NHL player.
Prospects shows are the best. The best I tell you the best. GOLD!
So interesting to hear about a late draft pick. Got to keep the pipeline going and as the Canadiens move up the standings (confident our 2027 first round pick will be the 32nd) the ability to find players further in the draft will be critical.
Forgot to add – No decent goalie has come from Cornell.
Love the ECAC, I was born a Clarkson fan, had a cousin coach St Lawrence University. A lot of really good hockey. LOL Had a smoke with Rejean Houle at a Clarkson game once, when his son lighting it up with Clarkson. I have a lot of respect for players who take the route of education and hockey. I would love to see Canada invest more in their College programs. Mens and Womens.
Yvan is my all time favorite Hab.
Finally someone is mentioning Cournoyer
Fowler is great ….. but he is short 6-1 … for a top dog NHL goalie. ….. Alexis Cournayer …. 20 years …. 6-4 ….. 205 pounds
Cournoyer or Fowler for the future??
The best goalie is the one that has great talent but also, when he is on his knees there is no space/gap between his shoulder and the goal cross bar. … Imagine the advantages of being a 6 foot 8 inch goalie.
Volokin is another goalie no one is talking about either we got some goalie depth by the looks of it
marco if canada and italy plays against each other you cant loose
Did you like Hasek when he played? Or did you disparage his style and underestimate him?
Cournoyer Miller Volochin lots of options down the road
thanks for the update, what about Quentin Miller? any good upside to his game? how is he doing?
Wasn’t Dryden from Cornell ?
To say it was a crime against humanity that McDavid wasn’t in the playoffs his first seems a bit silly. A crime against humanity might be the Leafs getting out their golf clubs every April.
Unbelievable Stats! However, from his highlights, Cournoyer goes down on butterfly facing every shots. Good side of that is credit to his great positioning and using his size. Down side is this might not work in NHL against the sniper calibers.
how can we watch Cornell this weekend?
As a Cornell fan, I've loved Cournoyer, very glad he is in the habs pipeline. I've also been high on Charlie Major, undrafted but played with Hage with the Chicago Steel and was only a couple points behind him in Hage's draft year.
also worth mentioning emmett croteau… another habs goalie prospect – dartmouth and cornell would be an amazing matchup in the ecac final in lake placid
I'm glad to hear that he is a big build because now he is kind the best of both worlds. Technically sound and big that is the kind of goalie we need.
Fowler may be technically sound but he is too small.
Dobes migt be big but I don't think he'll ever reach the technical soundness required to ease people's mind.
Let's compare ECAC rookie of the year 1986-87 John Fletcher, the 5'7" goalie for Clarkson University. I lived in same dorm as I and he was the person that showed me how to do a wrist shot in the dorm hall 🙂 … But compare him to the size of the ECAC goalies today. The NCAA has really become an NHL minor league compared to what it was long ago.
Maybe he will be the goalie to bring back the famed Quebec goalies pipeline. MA Fleury was kind of the last of the Quebec goalies, time to start the next generation of star goalies.
